＃５のお礼欄に「ただやっぱりすっきりと理解できません」というコメントをいただいたので再挑戦。 「ともすれば」「本来ならば」と訳してはどうでしょうねえ。ちなみに、その例文は「Debris is a word used to describe the remains of something that would been been destroyed.」の言い換えです。はい、これで理解できたら以下は読む必要無し。 では、「otherwise」という単語がなかったらどうでしょう。「Debris is a word used to describe the remains of something that has been destroyed.」と書いてあったとします。これでも実はイケるのです。「Debrisは、破壊された何かの残りを表すのに使われる単語である。」という意味になりますから。でも、突き詰めていくと、じゃあ、例えば東京駅はレンガ造りの古くて美しい正面部分だけを残して、後方を破壊し、駅構内を近代的で機能的なものに造り替えてあります。この、意図してきれいに残した正面部分はdebris（残骸）なのでしょうか。違いますよね。 なので「Debris is a word used to describe the remains of something that has been otherwise destroyed.」すなわち「Debrisは、ともすれば／本来ならば、破壊されていたであろう何かの残りを表すのに使われる単語である。」 となるわけです。要するにdebrisは「クズや破片」ですよね。＃５欄で引用しました広辞苑の「見るかげもなく」の意味合いが、この「otherwise」によって引き出されるわけです。 この「has been otherwise」は大人っぽい表現なので、なかなか“実感”はしにくいと思いますよ。どちらかというと、そういうものだと思って繰り返しいろいろな例文に触れているうちに染み込むものです。

canとcouldの現在の可能性についての違いが理解できません。 辞書には can:used to say that something is possible could:used to say that something is possible or might happen と書かれていました。 ほとんど同じ意味ですよね？ 違いは何なのでしょうか？ よくある熟語でThat couldn't be better! というようなものがありますが、 That can't be better.は聞いたことがありません。もやもやしているので、どうかよろしくお願いします。

こんにちは＾＾ 私は英英辞典を使っているのですが、utterlyという単語を引いたところ、 used especially to emphasize that something was very bad, or that a feeling was very strong. と書いてありました。 usedはどんな働きをしているのかよくわかりません。 そもそもいきなりusedとはじまっているのはどういうことなのでしょう。え？いきなりなんで過去形？って感じでして。。。 あともう一つ質問があります。 insistという単語を引いたところ、 to demand that something should happen. と書いてありました。 これは、～を要求すること、と文全体が名詞になっているわけですが、 something should happen のところがわかりません。 このsomethingはいったいなんなのか、 また、should の後ろは原形のはずなのにhappenがなぜ使われているのか。 以上が質問の内容です。 回答よろしくお願いします。
