この英文はどんな意味なんでしょうか？
下記は、とある小説の一部ですが、and以下が何を言っているのかわかりません。特にitからsongsまでは、どこからどこが意味のある文節なのか、全くわかりません。具体的な単語がある時のほうが読みやすいのですが、このような文を調べるにはどんな辞書または調べ方をしたらいいのでしょうか？ He had a voice for crooning Motown and it cracked me up to hear him put it to work onangsty teenage authority songs--but then again, who knew? One of those things he'd work out in time.

まずcrooning Motown の代表曲として、テンプテーションズの「マイ・ガール」( Temptations "My Girl" )などをお聞きになってみて下さい。 http://www.google.co.jp/search?hl=ja&q=%22my+girl%22+temptations&lr= ということで、このような訳にしてみました： モータウンミュージックのラブソングを歌うのにピッタリの声をしてるというのに、あの声で鬱憤をぶつけたティーンエージの歌を歌うんだから大笑いよね。でも、あの歌の中からそのうちヒットが生まれる可能性だってなきにしもあらずかも。 意味としてはこんなところだと思います。つまり、息子さんは甘い歌声なのに、若者独特の不安や悩みが語られた歌詞の曲を切々と歌っていたから、そのギャップにお母さんは吹き出してしまったのでしょう。「でもちょっとまって、将来どうなるかなんて誰も分からないわ」というのがbut then again, からの部分だと思います。

＃4です、ご丁寧なお礼をありがとうございます。 私は英語→日本語はまあいいとしてもその逆は苦手ですので、お礼の最後のご質問は自信を持って回答できないんですよ。 英語の文がどういうことを言っているのかというのは、例えば今回の場合ですと、そのセリフが語られた状況を思い描けば大体想像出来るのではないでしょうか。この文ではcrooning Motown とangsty teenage authority songs という、ちょっと調べないと分からないものが出てきてしまいましたが（私の場合は昔の洋楽が大好きですので前者はすぐ分かりましたけど）、それさえクリアすればあとは想像力がものを言うかと思います。 日本語の訳文が日本語としては奇妙奇天烈なものを目にすることがありますが、それは英語を訳するという作業にとらわれすぎているためなんだと思います。まずは分からない単語を調べ、それからその文の大枠をつかんで、その状況に適した「セリフ」はなにかと考えれば、そんなにはずすこともない気がします。

No.1 の方の回答は見事なものだと思います。これだけの文から、あそこまで解釈されるとは。 onangsty という語についてですが、私は、ひょっとしたら on angsty がつながったものなのかな、と思いました。ただ、angust というのは、必ずしも陽気な気分とは限らないみたいです。 Urban Dictionary (angst) を見ますと (URLは下記)、 Feeling of sadness or depression, usually felt in the teen years というのがありました。 * http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=angst 日本語にどう訳せばいいのかは私の手に余りますが、そういうもやもやとした欝な気分という意味で用いられているという可能性はないでしょうか？ 文の構造は、No1の方の訳文を見ればお分りでしょうが、put ... songs までが、him の補語といった形でしょう。 then again は、Free Online Dictionary を見ると、 From another standpoint; on the other hand とあります。 * http://www.thefreedictionary.com/then+again 最後の文は、私流に訳せば、「そのうちにゃあ、どうにかなるってぇもんさ」みたいな感じです。 「このような文を調べる」方法については、私は素人なので何ともいえません。ただ、似たような文に大量に接することによって、カンを養うということは必要なんじゃないでしょうか。

早速お答えいただきありがとうございました。 onangsty は on angsty のタイプミスでした。 訳文を見ると「あ～、ここからここまでが1つの意味を成しているのか。」とわかるのですが、単語自体はわかるのに意味がまったく掴めない時が多々あります。まだまだ、読む量がたりないのかとも思います。 英語圏の小さな子たちは、どのようにしてこういう文章中のわからない言葉をしらべるのか分ると自分でも使えるかな。と思っています。

原文のコピーに少々間違いが無いでしょうか：onangstyはon gutsyでは？ 上記を考慮にに入れますと、文章は次のようになります： 彼は甘いモータウン気取りの声の持ち主であり、それをガッツのあるティーンエージャーの権威の歌に使っているのを聞くとめっちゃ笑えた、でもなあ、わからんもんだぜ。それはいつか彼がうまくすることだろう。 ところで、「モータウン」とは１９６０年代にデトロイトが震源地であった黒人ポップ、リズムアンドブルースのジャンルの一つ。デトロイトは自動車工場都市でモーターシティとも知られているので、モーターとタウン（町）をもじってできた言葉です。

早速お答えいただきありがとうございました。 onangsty は on angsty のタイプミスでした。 日本語訳、ありがとうございました。原作中では、17歳の息子がベースを弾きながら歌っているのを聞いたお母さんが言った言葉です。 訳してもらうと、どこからどこまでが意味をなしている語なのかもわかりました。 また、「モータウン」もリック・ジェームズを聞いてみてみました。

He said I can help him stop what's coming... ... that what I saw is salvation. A salvation that some people wants to stop. He said I can help him and I should see what he sees to understand. What I saw was those he killed a long time ago and those he will kill in the future. He just looked at me, sad, and said that he knows my decision before I even say it. He gave me this mashine. He said to use it if the vision changes back.

What was the experience like? I see it as a very positive thing. I think it’s an honor to play on all those other people’s records. And even if sometimes it took away from my own personal time, I think that only made me more anxious to do my own things.
