場合によっては「肝試し」「賭け」にもなるでしょうが、「挑戦」というような意味で、よく子供が I bet you can't eat a whole habanero pepper. I dare you! という感じで、「やれるもんなら、やってみろ！」という相手への嗾け、チャレンジです。これに応えて double dare ということも言えますが、このDouble Dare は子供のゲームショーのタイトルでもありました。

このリンクはESLの学生からの質問への答えが載っているウェブページです。http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic4305.html 子供が "I dare you!" と言うと、そのお返しに "I double dare you!" とよく言います、とありますから、「やれるなら、やってみろ」「いや、おまえがやってみろ」と言う売り言葉に買い言葉みたいなものですね。説明にもあるように、エクストラのdareの事もあります。

doubleのdareなんだから、文字通りの意味ならば二倍の（extraの）dareってことで、「最初よりも困難な挑戦」って捉えるのが適切かもしれないですね。 でも、同じこと（dance with Noreen）をするのにも関わらず、dareとdouble-dareになることを考慮すると、二倍の挑戦って覚えるのには少し違和感がありますね…。 miknnikさんの説明にもありますように、「売り言葉に買い言葉」⇒「慣用的な表現」と覚えとくことにします。 何度もご回答いただきありがとうございました。大変参考になりました。

「フレンズ」好きで、よく見てます。 でもお話のシーンは思い出せません。 ちょっと皮肉なギャグで、チャンドラーが言ったのかな？と想像しています。 私なら 「そのセーターよく着てるね、罰ゲームなの？」 と訳します。 この文の「ｄａｒｅ」は、子供なんかがよく使う「やれるもんならやってみろ！」というおふざけの種類ではないかと思います。 地面に落ちてるｍ＆ｍなんかを指して、「あれ食べてみろよ」なんて言ってふざけたりするようですよ。 日本人の感覚で考えると、ゲームで負けた訳でもないのになんでそんなことしなきゃいけないの？って思ってしまいますよね。

ゲーム感覚（おふざけ）ですか。参考になりました。ありがとうございます。 urban dictionaryに、"I dare you to go two weeks without deodorant." って例文がありました。ちょっと笑っちゃいました。ほんと、polarity123がおっしゃってるように、「なんでそんなことしなきゃいけないの？」って感じですね。 僕もフレンズ好きでよく見てます。ちなみに、このシーンは、レイチェルがタグ（レイチェルの元彼）にいった台詞です。レイチェルの部屋に残された赤いセーターを手がかりに、レイチェルのお腹の子の父親は誰だ？ってみんなが勘ぐって、元彼のタグがよく同じ赤いセーターを着ていたのを覚えてたフィービーがタグを呼び出して二人を引き合わせたシーンです。結局タグは父親じゃなかったんですけどね。

Double dare は最初のdareよりもっと難関のチャレンジで、dareを持ちかけられた時に、I double dare you! と子供達がよく言い返すので、前記のDouble Dare というようなゲームショーも作られたのでしょうね。

以下の文について教えてください。 I do recommend that you depart by at least 7AM becuase you are expected at the airport ... be expected to do といった使い方は認識があるのですが、 be expected at という使い方は一般的なのでしょうか。 例文などで調べてみたのですが、見当たらなかったので質問させて頂きました。

you continue because not only are you determined, you're confident that this is something you want to do.という文の not only are you determinedの文のつくりが、全く理解不能です。not only because you are determinedだったら納得がいくけど..自分は独学で英語を勉強しているので、こういう文法のつくり方とかの知識がまったくないので、まったく理解できないです。こういう文法はどのような名前の文法なのか、また普通の 文でなく、こういうふうな並べ方で文をつくることでのニュアンスの違いなどを知りたいです。 だれか、知恵をわけてください！

以下の文を訳してください。 よろしくお願いします。 前半は分かるのですが（onion? まで)、後半部分の参考になるかもしれないので一応書きました。 You can also do a marine paella made with seafood or a mountain paella made with meat. There are a lot of convinations! Have you used as ingredients tomato, garlic and onion? You have done the paella so it is because of you not me. You are very kind but I do not have that special abilities.

そうだったんですね。 how dare you！で、よくもやってくれたな！ってのがありますが、もともと名詞で「挑戦」って意味だったんですね。なんか納得しました。ありがとうございます。 ちなみに、double dareの使い方ですが、「やれるもんなら、やってみろ！」に応答する際に使う言葉ということは、「やってやろうじゃないか！」って感じでしょうか？その使用例も教えていただけると有難いです。
