和訳のしかたがわかりません
Salt,especially ,was fairly scarce, an important quality for something used as a means of exchange. という英文なのですが 塩は特にかなり不足していて、の後のan important quality for somethingの訳し方が分かりません

まず、訳としてはこんな感じです。 「とりわけ、塩は供給量の非常に少ないものだった。これは交換手段に用いるものとしては重要な特性である」 文法的・構文的に説明すると、いわゆる「同格」というものの一種になります。 「同格」とは、普通は、ある名詞語句Aの後に、それを説明する名詞語句Bをひっつける用法で、意味的に名詞語句A ＝ 名詞語句B の関係があります。 その変種として、この文のように名詞語句ではなく一つの文章の場合があります。 （文法学者によってはこういう場合「同格」という言い方をしないこともあります） 普通の「同格」は、[名詞語句], [名詞語句]。 その変種でこの場合のように [主語・述語を備えた一つの文], [名詞語句]という形があり、前の文の内容を後の名詞語句で補足的に説明を加えています。 [Salt （especially）was fairly scarce] ＝ [an important quality （for something used as a means of exchange）] [塩はとりわけ供給量の非常に少ないものだった] ＝ [（交換手段に用いるものとしては）重要な特性] 英語で書き直すと Salt, especially, was fairly scarce. いい例文があります。 To buy means to give money for something. To buy(買うこと) means(意味する) to give money(お金を払うこと) for something(何かのために、何かに対して) 「買うことは、何かに対してお金を払うことを意味します。」 となりますね。 では本題の和訳に行ってみましょう。 まず、単語・文節レベルで意味の通じる部分を抜き出してみます。 Salt(塩) especially(特に) was fairly scarce(とても不足していた) an important quality for(～にとって大切なこと) for something used(～に使われるための) means of exchange(交換すること) ここでカンマで区切られているのは、挿入句だと思います。 Salt was faily scarce. (塩は不足していた) に対して、 especially(特に)、an important～(交換に使われるために大切な) の２つが付与されているような形ですね。 これが歴史関連の文書だったと仮定して意訳してみると、 『塩は、特に、交易にとって大切な塩は、とても不足していた』 …といった具合の意味になるのではないでしょうか。 まぁ私の英語はあまり信用してはいけないのですが。。。 参考になれば幸いです。

こんにちは＾＾ 私は英英辞典を使っているのですが、utterlyという単語を引いたところ、 used especially to emphasize that something was very bad, or that a feeling was very strong. と書いてありました。 usedはどんな働きをしているのかよくわかりません。 そもそもいきなりusedとはじまっているのはどういうことなのでしょう。え？いきなりなんで過去形？って感じでして。。。 あともう一つ質問があります。 insistという単語を引いたところ、 to demand that something should happen. と書いてありました。 これは、～を要求すること、と文全体が名詞になっているわけですが、 something should happen のところがわかりません。 このsomethingはいったいなんなのか、 また、should の後ろは原形のはずなのにhappenがなぜ使われているのか。 以上が質問の内容です。 回答よろしくお願いします。
