学問は、親の期待にこたえるためよりも、自分自身のために励むべきだ。 A person should concentrate on their studies for themselves, not in order to live up to their parents' expectations. 問題と解答例は上記で、幾つか疑問などがありました。 (1) なぜ not の位置がここなのか。 in order not to ではないのかと思いました。 (2) 主語が A person で始まっているのに、なぜ their や themselves で受けているのか。 (3) (1)の not の位置とも関係してくるのですが、もし、この英文を二文に分けたらどうなるのか。 A person should not concentrate on their studies in order to live up to their parents' expectations. They should do for themselves. こうなるとすれば、 in order not to では意味合いがおかしくなるの は分かります。 分かる方がいらっしゃいましたらよろしくお願いいたします。

- put upの使い方
人を家に泊めるという意味で put upという言葉がありますよね。例えば 「I'll put up my niece in the spare room.」というふうに使いますよね。この場合、my nieceを代名詞にして 「I'll put up her in the spare room.」としたら間違いになるのでしょうか？ 普通は 「I'll put her up in the spare room.」になると思うんですが、この場合の upって前置詞なんでしょうか、それとも副詞になるんでしょうか？・・・turn offとかpick upも似たような性質がありますよね、、、。

- pearl jam 「daughter」の解釈
pearl jam の、「daughter」という曲、けっこう有名だし私自身好きなのですが、歌詞の意味が全然わかりません。 もっと言えば、一つ一つの文や語の意味がある程度分かっても（訳せても）、何を言おうとしているのかがわかりません。 特定の文化を前提とした解釈が必要な部分があったり、予備知識としての背景などの点で私に情報が足りないのかもしれませんが、わかることだけでもお教えいただけるとありがたいです。 alone..listless.. breakfast table in an otherwise empty room. a young girl..violens.. center of her own attention. mother reads aloud, child tries to understand it tries to make her proud. the shades go down its in her head painted room can't deny theres something wrong. don't call me daughter not fit to the picture kept will remind me she holds the hand.. that holds her down she will... rise above
