when Kathy bought a new bicycle, she was given a choice of one of two discount options for buying accessorise, such as a bike rack, water bottle, air pump, helmet, or gloves. the options are: Option1: A certificate for $5 off a total purchase of $25 or more. Option 2: 10% off any one accessory. what advice would you give to Kathy to help her determine which option she must choose to save the most money? show the mathematics you used to decide what your advice would be.

Kathy, you should choose Option 1 if your total purchase is between $ 25 and $ 50. And otherwise, you should choose Option 2. The reason is that if your total purchase is under $ 25, you cannot get any discount if you choose Option 1, on the other hand, you can get 10% discount in case Option 2. And if your total purchase is over and equal to $ 25 and under $ 50, if you choose Option 1, then your discount is $ 5, on the other hand, if you choose Option 2, you certainly get discount, but it is only $ 2.5 or a little higher but under $ 5, and this is lower than $ 5 which is discount in the case of Option 1. But Kathy, if your total purchase is over $ 50, discount becomes higher if you choose Option 1, not Option 2. In the case that your total purchase is just $ 50, discount in Option 1 is $ 5 and that in Option 2 is $ 5, so you may choose either Option 1 or Option 2 because their discount values are same.

Kathy should choose Option1 if her total amount of the payment is between $25 and $50. Otherwise, then She should choose option2.

You may choose Option1 if you buy less than 50$ per accessory.

nothing could be further from the truth. Most people think of mathematics as a very clean, exact subject. One learns at school to expect that if a mathematical problem can be stated succinctly, then it will probably have a short answer, often given by a simple formula. Those who continue with mathematics at university level, and particularly those who do research in the subject, soon discover that nothing could be further from the truth. For many problems it would be miraculous and totally unexpected if somebody were to find a precise formula for the solution; most of the time one must settle for a rough estimate instead. * Timothy Gowers, Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction

And so the customer, of course, is the housewife. What do they pay us for ? I do not know how many people in the world make soap, but there are a great many. And I can’t tell you the difference between one kind of soap or the other. And why does the buyer have a preference, and a strong one, by the way? What does it do for her? Why is she willing to buy from us when on the same shelves in the US or in Japan or in Germany there are soaps from five other soap manufacturers? She usually does not even look at them. She reaches out for that soap. Why? What does she see? What does she want? Try to work on this.

  • multipled them by nought.

Of course what I say about the rhythms of prose is for the feeling and not for the intellect, for were one to work out a rhythm with the precision of mathematics, one's spontaneity would be gone, after which whatever one said might have the value of many millions after a mathematician had multipled them by nought. after which以降、ある人が言ったことが、数学者がゼロを加えるから 数百万の価値を持つこととなる・・・という部分が何を言いたいのか 解りません。

Ignoring queuing delays, the response time for a passenger is the mean time taken by the escalator to ascend or descend one floor. The throughput (bandwidth) is the mean number of passengers that can be loaded or per second. Suppose that an average of five people step on the escalator in one second, and that the escalator takes an average of 10 seconds to go up one floor. The response time for a passenger, therefore, is 10 seconds, and the throughput of the escalator is 5 passengers/second. Thus, the degree of parallelism, which is the mean number of passengers carried simultaneously, is 5*10=50. To see this, mark a passenger with a daub of red paint as she steps on the escalator. In the ten seconds that she takes to reach the top, we expect that fifty more passengers boarded the escalator. Thus, when she steps off, the escalator carries an average of fifty passengers, which is its degree of parallelism.

Being good at math is seen as perhaps the purest indication of intellectual ability, and it is often imbued with a mystique that extends far beyond the actual skills involved. People who are good at math are popularly seen as smarter than people who are good at sculpture or auto mechanics. Even if one cannot mold a sitting figure or repair a transmission, the process of doing so is not so mysterious that it is impossible to imagine ever doing it oneself. The same is not true for mathematics, perhaps because no day-to-day analogy for the skills involved ever comes to mind; sculpture is reasonably like making sand castles, auto repair is similar to changing a light bulb or tightening a screw. * by Marlene Zuk, Sexual Selections

Why do animals play? Probably for fun, most people would say. But much of what animals do for fun has a far more serious side: the playtime activities animals engage in are for developing survival skills. We don't have to go to a zoo or to the wilds to see this demonstrated. Two house cats will be enough. All we have to do is watch them play for a minute or two. One of the cats 【assumes】 the role of a hunter as it stalks the other; which is the victim in this case.
