of の使い方ですが・・・、たぶんもともとは・・、 ［分量・内容を表わして； 数量・単位を表わす名詞を前に置いて］ …の a box of chocolates 1箱のチョコレート a cup of coffee 1杯のコーヒー. two pounds of pork 豚肉2ポンド. こういう使い方と同じということではないでしょうか？ ＞「数十ドル」なら[the tens of dolllars],「数百ドル」なら[the hundreds of dollars]でしょうか? そのとおりです。 ＞[of]を外すとおかしいですか? おかしいです。 日本語とは違う言語ですから、こういう言い方をするのだと、覚えるしかありません。 その他の表現としては、 scores of （数十の、たくさんの）、dozens of （数ダースの） などもあります。 up は、～に上がって という意味の副詞で、当選に該当者が出なかったので、 賞金が積みあがって、～に達した といいたいのだと思います。

この英文なんですが What is more, the railways were opening up every corner of it for inspection and admiration. Where once the circuit of people's lives was tens of miles or less, now it was hundreds. tens, hundredsが付く場合はどのように訳すのでしょうか？ 普通、10マイルというのなら、ten milesだと思うのですが…。 ちなみに、前文のitはその前の文のBritainをさしていると思うので、「その上、鉄道路線は調査や感嘆のためにイギリスのいたる地域に作られた」という意味だと思いますので、mileはその鉄道距離のことを言っているのかな、と思ったのですが、circuit of people's lifeとあるので（これもどういう意味かよくわかりませんが）「人々の生活（人生）の巡回」だとすれば、tens of mileはこのことをさしているともいえますし…。 お分かりになる方、ご協力ください！
