たくさん質問があります。（文法や語順）
英作対策のため。例文を覚えることをしていますが、解説がありません。 それで、自分で文法の解説をやってますが、納得いかないことがあるので教えていただきたいです。 確認したいことも書いていますのでご面倒ですがよろしくお願いします。 1.It took me about two hours and a half to dig a hole one meter in diameter and two meters in depth. →holeとhole以下のつながりなのですが、a one meter～holeとならないのでしょうか？？ それで、a one meter以下が長いからholeを前に持ってきて、one meter～以降が後でholeを修飾しているのでしょうか？？ 2.lest S shouldは『～しないように、～するといけないから』ですが、lestは接続詞でいいんでしょうか？？ 3.It has been announced that railway fares will be raised by 10% on and after March 1st. →１０％ on となっていますが、upじゃダメなんですか？？なんでonなのでしょうか？？なんのonなんですか？？ 4.It is the audience which really determines. →強調構文ですが、whoじゃないのでしょうか？？なんでwhichなんですか？？ 5.It makes no difference to me that those engaged in this. →those (who)は違う表現でしたら、どういう表現で表せますか？？

回答１ a one meter in diameter and two meters in depthは、この文では副詞的に働いていて（第五文型だという人もいます）、直径と深さの度合いを表している「副詞句」です。a one meter---holeと出来ないのはin deameterとin depthがあるからですね。 回答２ lestは接続詞です。ですが、文語ですので、英作文で使うのであればIn case that/For fear that/in order that--not/などを使う方が良いでしょう。 回答３ on and after March 1＝「三月一日以降」です。 回答４ audienceは集合名詞と呼ばれ、それ自体をひとつの物としてみなす事があります。whoでももちろん構いませんが、whichにすることで、より集団的なニュアンスが出ます。 回答５ whoはいらないでしょう。これは仮主語構文でIt=thatですから本来 the fact that those engaged in this makes no different to me. です。 ということはthose=peopleです。

取りあえず、簡単な所だけ。 3. ですが、"10% on" ではなく "on and after March 1st" と区切ります。 これは、"on March 1st and after March 1st"（３月１日当日と３月１日より後）、つまり「（３月１日当日も含む）３月１日以降」ということで、共通部分である "March 1st" を一つにまとめてしまった形です。 値上げが行われることは "be raised"、その値上げ幅は "by 10%" によって示されています。この by は、変動や差異などがどれだけあるかを示す前置詞で、"be raised by 10%" なら「10％だけ上げられる（値上げする）」という意味になります。

I guess it depends on what you mean by 素晴らしい which is one of those words that could mean just about anything in English to be honest ネイティブの先生に上記のような説明を受けました。 しかし、訳しにくく、ま文法的にどうなっているのか分かりません。 どなたか分かる方がおりましたら、和訳と、文法的説明お願いいたします。

A few days ago, I came across a ring-sized box my boyfriend was obviously planning to give me. It had the name of a company on it, and I immediately Googled it out of curiosity.
