cultureの解釈
CathtyとSimonの夜のテレビ番組をめぐっての会話です。 Cathy： What's on television this evening? Simon: I don't know. Look in the paper. Cathy: The news starts at seven o'clock and there's a good film on BBC at nine. Simon: Yes, but what time is “Match of the day”? Cathy: Oh Simon, you know I can't stand sports. Simon: Well, there's ice skating at quater past ten. Cathy: That's a much better idea. A bit of culture. ここでしっくり来なかったのは、SimonがMatch of the dayを見ようとしたら、Cathyがスポーツは大嫌いだと反論しますが、アイススケートで落ち着きますよね。しかし、アイススケートもスポーツの一つですよね。Cathyとしては、サッカーやホッケーのような球技はダメだがアイススケートはOKということですよね。 更に、最後の A bit of cultureですが、これはこのことを言っていると思います。しかし、スポーツもcultureの一つのような気がしますが、ここでは反対的な意味合いを感じます。A bit of cultureを「少しの文化」と訳したら まるっきり意味が通らなくなりますよね。私としては 前の much betterもやや消極的で 「よっぽどまし」くらいの意味で、 A bit of cultureで「こっちの方が少しは華があるわね。」と読みましたが、こういう解釈で正しいでしょうか？ それから、look inはlook intoにも置き換えられると思いますが、ニュアンスの差はありますか？

えっと、BBCの"Match of the day"ならfootballですね♪ イギリス英語でのスキットでしょうか？ まぁ、イギリスの場合、サッカーファンは非常に多く、working classからwhite-collarまで人気がありますが、やはりイメージとしてはblue-collarなんですよね。子供の遊びととしてもボールがあればできるものなので、高価な用具を必要とする、又はお金がかかるスポーツではないので、庶民的なんですね☆ でも、upper classから見れば、ちょっと...と言う風に思われるのがサッカーで、類似ボールゲームならラグビーの方がよりupper classのイメージがあるのです。夏のcricketもしかり。 だから、サッカーが嫌いな人は、あんな野蛮で品の悪い応援をするブルーカラーっぽいファンが好むスポーツより、上品なアイススケートが良いと思われる人もいるわけです。 しかし、本当の品のある方なら絶対"a bit of cluture"なんて表現使いませんけどねｗ それから新聞ならlook in the paperになります。look into the paperと言ったら、物理的に何か新聞に挟まっているものを見てくれ、となるからね♪look in = read, look into = searchてな感じかな？ イギリスではテレビをthe boxって良く呼びます。What's on the box? そんじゃね!

miniで～す♪ Bonjour! う～ん、そうですね。この様なcolloquial phraseは英語学習者にはtres difficileでしょうね。かなりの文化的背景もあり、class consciousであるイギリス人特有の感覚でもあるのです☆ ちょっと使い方は特殊ですが、a bit on the sideとか、a bit of alrightとか、ネイティブじゃないと分からないexpression idiomatiqueもあります。 こーゆーのは、丸暗記しかないと思うのね♪ 上級者向きだけど。 ところで、quarterですね！(dix heures et quart du soir)。 「その方が良いわ。もっと上品だし。」 う～ん、こんな感じかな～。 A la prochaine♪ ☆ｍ☆

再度回答ありがとうございます。 そうなんですよ。colloquial phraseとかexpression idiomatiqueの問題なんでよね。こういうのってネーティブにとっては a piece of cakeなんでしょうけど。

Gです。 こんにちは！ また、私なりに書いてみますね。 まず、このice skatingですが、アイスホッケーと言うアメリカでも非常にラフ（アメフトよりも）で「喧嘩」をよくするので「野蛮」と言うイメージがアメリカにあり男が好むスポーツのひとつでなので、このアイスホッケーの事を言っているのではないと思います。 フィギアスケートの方で、もちろんスポーツの一種ですね、これなら、氷の上のダンス、と呼ばれるくらいですから、cultureの一部であることは間違いないですね。 ただ、このラフと言うイメージはイギリスではないかもしれませんね。 The Match of the Day,と言えば、「今日のマッチ」と言うだけ合って、時ためしかやらないボクシング類をさしているだけではないと思いますので、アイスホッケー、サッカー、クリケット等も含んでいると思います。 look inと言う表現はcheck withと言う表現と同じで「～で調べる」と言う意味合いで使われます。 熟語と言う名前で本来の意味から外れたい見合いと言うレベルの物ではなく、単に、look/in the paperの形で使われる表現です。 look intoはこれと違いlook into事柄,で「その事柄について調べる・チェックする・調査する」と言う意味で使われます。 I'm gonna check into China's population growth.と言う感じですね。 それに答えて、Oh, then you should look in a website called "China Now.com".と言うように使われ、それじゃChina Now.comでしらべられるよ、と言う事になります。 これでいかがでしょうか。 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

回答ありがとうございます。 私がホッケーを引き合いに出したので紛らわしくなりましたが、ice skatingとはフィギュアスケートのことだとピンと来ました。そういえば、イギリスではクリケットが盛んでしたね。それに、matchは球技とは限りませんで、ボクシングやレスリングなどの格闘技も該当しましたね。

「文化」という日本語自体が日本語に浸透しているようでかなり抽象的な単語です。「文化」て何となく分かっているようで説明しなさいと言われて即答できない人も少なくないと思います。更に「文明」との違いは何かというのも微妙な部分があります。 それに、「culture＝文化」というのも違いますね。 cultureを英英辞典で引いてみましたが、ここでは activities that are related to art,music,literatureに該当すると思います。 質問でも書いた通り、「少しの文化」では意味が通じないと言いましたが、「まだしも文化的だ」は体裁こそ整えても まだ不明確さや不自然さは残ります。 私も最初は戸惑ったものの妥協をして 「こっちの方が少しは華があるわね。」と解釈しましたが、これはハナから正確な訳を心がけたのではなく、行間も読んだ解釈ですので、もっと相応しい訳があるでしょう。

#1です。 質問文のホッケーにつられて、アイススケートをアイスホッケーと思いながら送信ボタンを押してしまいました。これなら血をみることはないですよね。

１．正しい解釈だと思います。 ２．into には置き換えられないでしょう。 「本に載っている」は in the book です。 into the book とは言いません。 look in で、ちょっと見てみるという意味のはずです。 look into は、調査する、検査するのような意味になると思います。

A bit of culture 少しは文化的ね 少しは教養ありね⇒「少しはましね」 Simonが ＞Yes, but what time is “Match of the day”? Matchを単なるスポーツと取らえるとわかりにくいですが、意味としては match （対・そろいの）一方, 片割れ((to ...))； （…と）よくつり合う一対, 好一対((for ...)) マッチ、例えば服の上下のカラーのマッチなどでも使いますが、対や1対1を表すニュアンスがあるようです。 ゴルフマッチ（競技は多人数参加だが、各コースでは誰かと競う）、プロレスやボクシングのマッチなど。 ですので、Cathyは“Match of the day”と聞いたとき「ああ、Simonがみるいつものか…（例えばプロレスとか）」と思ったのですが、アイススケートなら血を見るわけでもないしいいかな、という意味ではないでしょうか。（アイススケートも実はそばでみると激しいんですけどね） 実際Simonが、Matchの時間はわかっていないが、"Well, there's ice skating at quater past ten."と、この時間にアイススケートがあるけどどうだい？、と別の提案をしているので、Cathyがだめなのを悟ったのでしょう。 look inはlook intoのinformalな形で使われることがあるようです。

Thanks for your answer. >イギリス英語でのスキットでしょうか？ Oui,en effet. It is quoted from a book of learning English for French Speakers. In this book “A bit of culture” is translated “Un peu de culture”. That's just a "mot-a-mot"! 単語も文法もこれといって難しい部分はありませんが、こういう細かい部分を把握しないと会話の流れが掴みにくくなるダイヤローグですね。第一、和訳しにくいです。こういう会話って 単語帳で一生懸命単語を暗記し、文法を理解しても内容を把握しにくい文章かもしれませんね。確かに学校で習った英語より自然な感じはしますが、学校の英語では こんなに和訳しにくい文章はあまりなかったような気がします。
