こんばんは。 "shorter time"でしたね。前回に説明をした通り、この表現自体には間違いはないと思います。では、なぜそのネイティヴの方は間違いだと言ったのでしょうということになりますね。考えられる点はあります。 次の例文を見てみてください。 "Your hair color is brown." "My job is a police officer." "The season is winter now." 文法的には間違ってなさそうですが、なにか引っかかりますよね。それぞれの文に二重の情報があるのがわかりますか？例えば、最初の例文であれば、「あなたの髪の色は茶色です。」となり、色という情報が重なっているのです。 "Your hair is brown." というほうが自然な表現になります。 元の文"Going by car takes shorter time than train."を見てみると同じことが起きているのがわかりますよね。つまり、この話題で、shortという単語を使えば時間のことを話しているというのが明らかなのに、またtimeと続いているのでおかしいということなのでしょうね。一方、ここでlessを使うと何の数や量を話しているのかはっきりしないため、それを表すtimeが必要になるということです。satoruyさんがあまり馴染みのない表現だというのも、自然な言い方ではなかったからと考えられます。しかし、しつこいようですが間違いではないですよ(^^)。 ついでに、"in""on"と、"in""during"についてもお話しておきます。 chairという単語は集合名詞ではありません。ただ、いろんな種類のchairがあり、必ずしも"sit on"するだけではないということです。学校の教室にあるようなイスと校長先生が座っているイスを思い浮かべてみてください。教室のイスには上からお尻を乗せる感じがするのに対し、校長先生のイスには体をスポッといれる感じがしませんか（ちょっと強引ですかね…）？この感覚の違いがinとonで表されます。"sit in"できるchairもあるということですね。 滞在中の"in"と"during"ですが、最初の回答でもお話したとおり"in"には時間の「範囲」や「期間・期限」を表す働きがあることから、間違いではないです。私も、そのネイティヴの方のおっしゃるとおり、このような文章では"during"のほうがよく使われると思いますし、自分でも"during"を使います。 最後に付け加えたいのですが、英語に限ったことではないと思いますが、必ずしも答えがひとつ見つかるとは限らないということです。文法書や辞書も１００％ではないのです。英語を母国語としている人にも癖があったり、よく使う、使わないという表現もあります。ひとりひとり持っている感覚も違います。私たちの使っている日本語も本当に正しいのかは正直わかりません。でも、毎日その言語を使って生活しているのです。英文法のスペシャリストを目指すのか、普段の生活でコミュニケーションをとっていくためのものを学ぶのかという二つの視点で勉強していくといいと思います。私自身も日ごろ英語をそれらの視点で考えています。 少し余計なことまで書いてしまい、長くなってしまいましたが、参考にしていただければ幸いです。

自分で調べてみたのですがわかりません The Tokaido Shinkansen carries 150 million people a year, making it the busiest high-speed train line in the world. The nearly seven-hour train trip between Tokyo and Osaka became just four hours after the line opened in 1964. Today, the travel time is even shorter. It takes only two and a half hours on the Nozomi, the fastest train service on the Tokaido shinkansen. Traveling between Tokyo and Osaka takes longer by Shinkansen than it does by air. もう一つ思い出しました。 This chair is comfortable enough to sit. enough toを使って「このイスは座り心地がよい。」の意味を表せるのか？又、on/inなどの前置詞がなくてもよいのか？ 何回もすみませんが、よろしくお願いします。
