再び、どうも。 どんなに細かいことでも、少しでも疑問に思うことは早急に解決しておくべきだと思うので、どんどん細かいことにも凝っていってくださいね。私も、納得がいくまでなかなかものが覚えられず、納得いくまで調べますし(^^)。 さて本題に戻りましょう。onとinの使い分けということでしたが、「イス」が話題のときということでしょうか。少し違う例でお話させていただきます。 "I was in bed all day yesterday." "I was on bed all day yesterday." という二つの文章があるとします。はじめの文は、「（病気等で）調子が悪く一日中布団に入っていた。」という感じですね。二つ目の文章では、「（他にいるところがなかったので）一日中ベッドの上にいた。」というようになります。 "in"には時間なり、空間なりの中というイメージがあり、"on"には何かが何かとくっついているというイメージがあります。つまり、イスの話に戻ると、そのイスが座る空間を作っているものであれば"in"。単に、表面上にお尻を乗せているようであれば、"on"ということですね。 イメージが付きましたでしょうか？ そして、"shorter time"のほうですが、大丈夫ですよ。もう少しどの部分がしっくりこないかを教えていただけると助かります。が、ここでも例を挙げて説明してみますね。 A:"Which is longer,summer vacation or winter vacation?" B:"Summer vacation is longer." A:"Which is shorter,summer vacation or winter vacation?" B:"Winter vacation is shorter." これではどうですか？休みの時間的な長さが話題になっていますよね。休みの長さでも、かかる時間の長さでも、同じ「時間の長さ」の話題では"long"や、"short"使われます。 納得がいきましたでしょうか(^^)？また何かありましたら、補足質問のほうをお願いします。

自分で調べてみたのですがわかりません The Tokaido Shinkansen carries 150 million people a year, making it the busiest high-speed train line in the world. The nearly seven-hour train trip between Tokyo and Osaka became just four hours after the line opened in 1964. Today, the travel time is even shorter. It takes only two and a half hours on the Nozomi, the fastest train service on the Tokaido shinkansen. Traveling between Tokyo and Osaka takes longer by Shinkansen than it does by air. 再び、ありがとうございます。 shorter timeですが、takes+shorter+timeという組み合わせが、自分にはあまり馴染みのない感じがするのですよ。まあ、経験不足である点は否めませんが。。。 ところで、あるネイティブに聞いたところ、lessでもshorterでも意味的には同じだが、shorterは間違っているということでした。なぜだか分かりませんが、どう思われますか？
