laterの使い方
友人にたずねられたのですが、英和、和英、英英辞書を引いてもわからないので教えてください。彼女は緑内障で医者から１５年後くらいには失明するといわれたそうです。で、その話を下記のようにオーストラリア人に言ったらlaterの使い方がおかしいといわれたそうです。なぜおかしいのか聞きそびれたので,教えてほしいと言われたのですが、私にはわかりません。。 A doctor told me that I would lose my eyesight fifteen years later. 日本人はこういう間違った使い方をする人が多いとも言ってたそうです。

こういう場合は、in fifteen years が普通です。 in は within the time limit of の意味と、at the end of the specified period of time と二つの意味合いがあります。いずれも、自然な時の経過を示します。ある期間の経過の意味です。 later は意図的な意味で、eg) I will go later とか、I will go three hours later. のように使います。 したがって、I will go in three hours later. は間違いとなります。in は「～のうちに」で、later は「 ～の後」となり、同時には使えません。 また、after はlater than の意味で、この場合に使うと15年後の未来永久までを表します。（極端には天命の後も含めて）

later というのは、もともとlate （遅い）の比較級で より遅く、よりあとで、という意味ですので ～の後で、後から、遅れて、の意味で使い、 「これから先の○年後に」と言う場合は、after を使うのではないでしょうか。 I'll tell you later. (あとから、言います） See you later. (またあとでね） Do you have a class after? (こののち授業があるの？） Is there a party after? （このあと、パーティがあるの？） 確かに、うっかり間違って言いそうですよね。 参考までね。

翻訳の勉強中に作成した英文について質問します。 Dr. A suggested that the cancer was growing, and unless the operation was performed, the pain would occur two years later, and that since she had an irregular heartbeat, it would be better to operate at B hospital which usually examined her. ”A先生が「～」と示唆した”、という日本文から翻訳を行っています。なるべく日本文に即したいのでsuggestを用いたいと思っており、suggestであれば直接話法ではなく間接話法で構成するべきではないかと思い進めています。 suggestが表す内容と「～」の内容を一致させるのに苦心していますが、上記の文で問題ないでしょうか？ アドバイスをお願いします。

laterとlater on ある英会話のテキストに次の英文が記載されていました。 (1)Would you like to get together for a cup of coffee later? (2)How would you like to have a cup of coffee later on? laterの後のonですが、(1)には付いてませんが、(2)には付いています。 違いがわかりません。 教えてください。よろしくお願いします。

(正） I'll be back here in twenty minutes . (正） My mother died 10 years ago and my father died 2 years later. =My father died 8 years ago. そこで、今の時点から２０分以内に（または２０分後に）戻ってくるのを 「I'll be back here twenty minutes later はＯＫか」と２人のアメリカ人に 聞いたら、１人は in twenty minutes でも twenty minute later どちらでも ＯＫと言い、もう一人のアメリカ人（大学教授）はin twenty minutes とすべきで 過去・未来の出来事を述べずに、ただtwenty minutes laterはあり得ないと 言われました。 すなわち、twenty minutes later は「そのあと２０分して」だから「その」の 内容を抜きにして、単にtwenty minutes later という表現はあり得ない とのことでした。 実際の会話でもそのようにきちんと使い分けているのでしょうか？ あまり言語学的には考えず、 I'll be back here twenty minutes later （２０分したら戻るから）と言っても よいのでしょうか？

My family is going to Florida later this month. (私の家族は今月の後半にフロリダに行く予定です。) この訳は誤訳ではないですか？ later after the time you are talking about or after the present time この英文を話しているのが、今月上旬だとすると、必ずしも今月後半と言う訳にはならないと思うのですが。 late this monthになると思います。 教えていただけますと幸いです

I will go three hours laterは３時間後に行きますと言う感じですよね。だから友人は１５年後だから15 years laterと言ったのだと思います。 彼女はかなり流暢に英語が話せるのですが、それでもこんな簡単な表現を間違うのですから、外国語をマスターするのは難しいですね。 inの細かいニュアンスまで説明してくださってありがとうございました。 参考になりました。
