further up the passage
Further up the passage livedの後に個人名が出てきます。 その後の文章でThe further one went up that passage,the more mysterious things happen とあります。この場合pasageは時間経緯と解釈すればいいのでしょうか？ 他にどのよな意味が考えられるか、お教え願えると有り難いのですが・・・ 宜しくお願いいたします。

The guarantor system itself is one of the things that is making it difficult for foreigners to rent housing in Japan. 「保証人制度そのものが、外国人に住居を借りづらくさせている一因でもある。」 one of the things that ”is”ではなくて”are”でなけば駄目なのではないですか？ 説明もなしにone of the thingsとだけ言われても”何の一つなの？”ってなるので、 関係代名詞thatは明らかにthingsにかかっていますよね？

the more～ the more～の形の構文についての質問です。 この構文は副詞などと共に使えるのでしょうか。 例えばsurprisinglyやhe saidなどと共に使えるのですか。 (Surprisingly, he said that the more～, the more～.) それと例えば「本を読めば読むほど、より多くのことを知ることができる」という文章を英訳するとき The more books you read, the more things you can know. 英英辞典でbetweenをひくと with one thing or person on each side と出てきます。直訳すると「それぞれのサイドの一つの事、物と一緒に」と何かよく意味がわかりません。 なんでone thingなんですか？with two things or more thingsみたいにtwo thingsと考えていたんですが。 オンライン英英辞典では in or through the space that separates two things, people, or places: とわかりやすいのですが。 なんでone thingなのですか？またわかりやすい訳はどうなりますか？
