substance と object
Life is the quality which people, animals, and plants have when they are not dead, and which objects and substances do not have. 生命は人・動物・植物が生きている時に持っている特質で、物にはない。 object も substance も物ですが、どのように意味が違うのでしょうか。

文・・・people's curiosity to pursue interests and read books which they would not otherwise have known about or understood. という文があります。私はこれを以下のように解釈しました。 people's curiosity (人々の好奇心) to (toの形容詞用法) pursue interests 興味を追求する and read books whichな本を読むこと which they would not そうではない本(?) they は前後関係があるのでおいといて、otherwiseという語で戸惑いました。この先どう訳せばよいでしょうか？またwhichはinterestsにもかかるのでしょうか？理由を付けてお願いします。

without plant,plant-eating animals could not live. then meat-eating animals and man could not have any food. 植物なしでは、草食動物は生きれない。 そして、肉食動物と人は、いくつかの食べ物を食べれない。 と解釈したのですが、この文の大意は 植物がなければ植物を食べる動物も生きて入られないだろう。 そして、肉をたべる動物や人間は、食べ物をまったく得られないだろう。 でした。上の文（without～～not live.）は当たってると思うのですが、下の文（then～～any food）は全く違った解釈になってしまいました。でも大意をみても全く意味が分かりません。 自分の解釈 then（そして） meat-eating animals and man（肉食動物と人は） could not（できない） have any food.（少しの食べ物（種類）を摂ることが）. お願いします教えてください！
