ＮＯ１です。 ＞このbyは前置詞の受け身で使われていると考えていいのでしょうか？ 「前置詞の受身でつかわれている」という表現の意味を取り間違えているかもしれませんが、このbyは Computers can be used （to work for us） by this whole process. の（to work for us）を取り除いて、 Computers can be used by this whole process. 「コンピューターはこの全過程によって使用されることができる」 つまり、受身のbyです。 The house in which Mr.Smith lives is very large. の場合は、これも同様に分解して （１）The house is very large. （２）Mr.Smith lives in the house. となり、in the house のうち、the house をwhich に置き換えて、 The house in which Mr.Smith lives is very large. となります。

Good evening, momomin-san! 御存じのように文法的には、byは前置詞で、whichは関係代名詞と呼ばれるものです。それを頭に置いて、ご提示の文を分かり易く書き換えてみましょう。ただし、書き換えた文は便宜的な文で、正しい英文ではありません。 →This whole process ［ by it computers can be used to work for us ］has been called automation. 意味はお分かりかと思いますが、 「この全過程は、それによってコンピュータがわれわれのために働くように利用されることができるのですが、オートメーション（自動化）と呼ばれています。」 となりますね。この日本語訳は日本語として許されるのですが、もともとの英文は正しい英語ではありません。 This whole process ［ by it computers can be used to work for us ］has been called automation. この文は、This ..... automation.という英文に、［・・・］の部分が挿入されていますが、it は御存じのようにただの代名詞ですから、途中で文を続けることは出来ません。ところが、it を which という関係代名詞（前後を関係づける、結びつける代名詞と考えれば分かり易いと思います）にすると、文を続けることが出来ます。 つまり、by it を by which に変えると、正しい英文になり、その意味は上記の通りです。 This whole process ( by which computers can be used to work for us ) has been called automation. この（）は、はずしてもいいわけです。これで、いいでしょうか？もし、分かりにくければ、補足質問をどうぞ。では・・・。

関係代名詞は文を２つに分解するとわかりやすいと思います。 この文は、 (1)This whole process has been called automation. (2)Computers can be used to work for us by this whole process. に分解できます。 (2)の文章の、 by this whole process のthis whole process が which に置き換えられます。 by は置き換えることが出来ませんので、全体として This whole process by which computers can be used to work for us has been called automation. となります。
