他人事とは思えない、の言い方
交通事故が友人に起こりました。自分も同じ体験をしてるので他人事と思えないです。慰めの言葉を考えています。 辞書を調べたところ This is not just an affair of other people. という表現があったのですが、カナダ人に添削してもらったところ A car accident has affected me too. と直されました。ネイティブに直してもらっておいてナンですが、 なんとなくしっくり来ない感じがするのです。 辛さが分かるから他人事とは思えないという意味の時は affect meという表現になるのでしょうか？

アメリカに36年住んでいる者です。 私なりに書かせてくださいね。 カナダ人が書いてくれた英文が私の言う「フィーリング英語」なのです。 だから、それを読んだ人が「ああ、この人は、新聞の事故の記事を読んだけなのではなく、起こったのが友達だから他人事で済ませないほど精神的に感じているんだな」とわかるわけです。 しかもこの人の文章はhas affectedと現在完了を使って、経験したからわかる、と言う部分をいっているわけです。 つまり、他人事ではない、と言うことが他の人のことではない、と言っているのではなく、精神的に影響させられた、それだけ事故の苦痛がわかる、という本当の意味あいを言っているわけですね。 だから affected meと言う表現をして、しかも、当事者だけでなくと言うフィーリングをtooと言う単語ですらっと表現しているわけです。 ただ、私は、the/that/your car accident affected me, tooとcarの前を変えた言い方もできると感じます。 単なるひとつの事故ではなく、その・あなたの事故があなただけでなく私も、と言う表現をしているわけですね。 カナダ人の方は、自分も以前事故で経験をしたことがある、（だから他人事だとは思わない、と言う表現をしているわけです） ですから、theを使うことで、その友達の事故が私を他人事じゃないと感じさせた、と言う表現をしたに対し、カナダ人の方は、経験があるから、と言うことを強調したわけですね。 これでいかがでしょうか。 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

>This is not just an affair of other people. これは、単に他の人々に起きた出来事ではありません。 ひどく事務的な日本語でしょう? affair, matter は事務的または、うわさ話（他人事）にマッチするような単語。 concern, care, affection など感情中心の単語もあります。

「This is not just an affair of other people.」とすると、これは他人の関与すべきことではなく、自分自身のというか、個人的な問題であるという意味になり、まるっきり意図がズレてしまいます。 一応 「I can't see it with an idifferent eye.」という訳も考えられますが、これでは、友人に同情しているようなニュアンスがやや希薄になります。やはり、カナダ人が添削した訳がベターかなと思います。

It feels [I feel] as if it happened to myself (because I have had another before). くらいでしょうか。 あまり関係ないですけど、 「交通事故が友人に起こりました。」という表現は珍しいですね。

I’ve been dating a great guy, “Max,” for about a year. Not too long after we met (we weren’t dating then), we started talking about family, siblings, etc. I mentioned I’d had a sister who died at a young age in a car accident. He said he’d lost a brother, “John,” the same way. It bonded us in a way, and it wasn’t long after that talk that we began dating. Over the Memorial Day weekend I went with Max to visit his family. They live in another state, and it was the first time I met them. Max’s mother was showing me some family pictures, and there were several of John. I know how hard it is for mothers to talk about their dead children, so I was as sympathetic as I could be. I mentioned my sister, and her car accident. Max’s mother looked at me kind of strangely but didn’t say much. Later I was talking to Max’s sister and again mentioned John’s death in a car accident. His sister corrected me and said it wasn’t a car accident, it was an OD. Apparently John OD’d when he was 18. This isn’t something I’d mind or find shameful. I know some addicts, and they are good people. It is the addiction that is bad. What I don’t understand is why Max lied to me. I can see lying to a stranger. 添削してもらった時にaffect meという表現の言ってることがなんとなくは分かったですが、あくまでなんとくなくの感覚だったので、なぜaffectなのかと考えるとそれを説明できるほど分かってなかったので丁寧な説明ありがとうございます。なぜtooがあるのかもよく分からなかったですが、この意味もわかりました。ありがとうございました。
