とりあえずご指摘の英文の意味を取ってみます。 > If he has done anything very well, there is a conspiracy to prevent him from doing it again. もしもその偉大な人物が何事かを見事になしたとすると、再び同じことをさせまいとする邪魔が入るだろう。 > It must be owned that sometimes he likes it. 彼は時にはそれが気に入ったということを言わなければならないだろう。 この own は confess とか admit の意味かもしれないと思って上のように解してみました。 偉大な人間でも世に知られてしまえば、ただの人に堕してしまう危険にさらされるものだ、ということを言いたい文章？ もっと長い文章であればもう少し文脈から理解しやすいのかもしれないですけど、いきなりこういう文章を示されたら戸惑ってしまってもおかしくないですね。

I hadn't heard him come in and I must have looked surprised at seeing him there, because he smiled and asked if it was all right for him to sit there. He was silent for a few minutes and then he began to talk. His long thin finger pointed to the book in front of me and he said that it was interesting. Of course I didn't argue with him, even though, I didn't really agree. But it soon became clear to me that he knew a lot about Greek history, for he started to tell me things that were in that book as if he'd written it himself. In any company there is always to be found one whose pride it is that he is different from his fellows. 語順が変則的になっていますか？ 特にthere is always to be found oneの部分の構造が分かりません。 be動詞＋不定詞で「to be」は可能を表すので、 「～の人を常に見つけらることができる」みたいな意訳になりますが、 直訳ではどうなりますか？

They say that he will be a great person.の二通りの同意文完成をするという問題で、次のように書き出しが指定されました。 1:It is ( ). 2:He is ( ). １の場合、It is said that he will be a great person.でいいのはわかるのですが、 ２の場合、He is said to be a great person.でいいのでしょうか。 これだと、もとの文章がThey say that he is a great person.の場合との混同が起こると思うのですが。 かといって、He is said to be going to be a great person.だと、くどすぎる気もします。（というか、英英辞典にも、be said to be going to Vという例文を見つけることは出来ませんでした。） sayを無理に使わず、たとえばsayをexpectで代用するなどして、He is expected to be a great person.などとするのでしょうか。 expectにはこれから先の行為を期待する、という意味が込められるので、この文章で未来をあらわすことが出来るというのはわかるのですが。 お答えいただければ幸いです。

回答ありがとうございます。 出典はWilliam Ralph Inge のＡ Rustic Moralist のようですが、 https://www.amazon.co.jp/Rustic-Moralist-William-Ralph-Inge/dp/1258126303 上記で見ると386ページの非常に分厚い本ですので、これだけの分量の引用でで作者の意図を理解するのは難しいでしょうね。 あと少しは引用出来る部分もあるのですが、私はそれほどキーボードを早打ち出来ませんので省略しています。時間がかかるんです。
