次のotherwiseはどういう意味でしょうか
The male and female guppies were kept in separate tanks so they could see each other but not otherwise directly interact. 意味としては、見ることはできるが触れ合うことはできない、ということだと思いますがこのotherwiseは必要ですか？

> お返事ありがとうございます。otherwise notという語順にはならないのですね？こちらのほうがなんとなくわかるのですが。。 otherwiseってとても便利な言葉で、長い文を一言で置き換えられるのですが、それだけに見慣れない使い方だと違和感が大きいです。使い方もいくつかあり、そもそも省略的に使われているので他の省略と組み合わさっていたりして慣れないと余計わかりにくいです。 文の広範は、 but could not otherwise directly interact. の省略で、otherwise, directlyは副詞としてinteractを修飾します。副詞なのに動詞の後ろではなくここにあるのはその前に助動詞couldが付いているから。 これが文法的な解説ですが、直感的には、次の様にイメージしてみてはどうでしょう？（私は文法が苦手なので、実は意味を理解するほうが先で、後で文法を見て答え合わせをすると言う順番です）。 まず、see each other (お互いに見る）と言う状況をイメージしてください。それに対して、otherwise directly interact (別の直接的な交流）をイメージします。 直接タッチする、臭いをかぐ、音を聴く、。。。そのイメージの上にバッテンをつけます（つまりnot) 。 文としてはそう言う構造です。そうすると、otherwiseがnotの前には出ないことが直感的にわかるのではないでしょうか？

Otherwiseが無いとちょっとした不都合があります。 they could see each other --- 彼らがお互いを見ることができた but not otherwise directly interact --- しかし他には直接交流しあうことができなかった 直接お互いに見ることができるのは直接交流しあうことのひとつのやり方だと思いますがotherwiseを取ってしまうと、直接交流が全部できないことになってしまうので、矛盾がおきます。 全体は、 「オスとメスのグッピーは別々の水槽に入れられ、互いに見ることはできたが、それ以外の直接の交流はできなかった。」

otherwise ~さもないと という意味で絶対に必要です。 淡水魚を飼った経験から申すのですが、お互いに喧嘩をしてしまうのです。 淡水魚は似たものどうし争い、 海水魚は似たものどうし群れをつくる という傾向があるからです。 オスとメスとが互いに傷つけ合わないよう配慮が必要だということを伝えたくてotherwise を挿入しているのでしょう。

The observation that “we look at each other, but we do not see each other any more” has perhaps itself achieved the status of “words which we utter but scarcely ever hear.” 「私たちを一部を見れているが、全体を見渡すことはできていない」という見解はおそらく、「口に出すがほとんど聴くことはない言葉」という地位に達したそれ自身を有している。？？？ ＜“we look at each other, but we do not see each other any more” の部分は、慣れてしまうこと（familiarity）によって全体が見れなくなってしまうようなことだと思うんですが、そのほかの部分がよくわかりません。ちなみにChomskyの文章です。 お願いします。

One group identified a problem common in a lot of town-the frustratingly long lines at popular restaurants on Saturday night. The team decided to help those people who didn't want to wait in line. They paired off and booked reservations, and they sold each reservation for up to twenty dollars to customers who were happy to avoid a long wait. As the evening passed, they made several interesting observations. First, they realized that the female students were better at selling the reservations, probably because customers were more comfortable being approached by young women. They adjusted their plan so that the male students ran around town making reservations at different restaurants while the female students sold these places in line.
