「英語を勉強中で、そんなに長時間ではないけど毎日続けるようにしている」と英語で言ったとき、 「そんなに長い時間ではないが」 「ほんの短い時間でも」 の部分をnot so long timeと表現したところ、ネイティブの先生に、 not so long/not such a long time で表現すべきと指摘されました。 not so long timeが不適切な理由はなんですか？なんとなく自分でも感覚的にちょっと違うことはわかります。 not so long timeだと「毎日の習慣としての短い時間（１～２時間程度）」の次元ではなく「数年」といった大きなスパンを言及しているニュアンスになることはわかるのですが。。 こう…はっきりとどういった使い分けが必要で、どういった理由で不適当なのかご解説できる方、よろしくお願いします。

If he hadn't studied hard, he couldn't have passed the test. 3. は仮定法で、このcouldは能力を表していると思うのですが、そもそも 推量・可能性と仮定法のcoudld have+p.p.はどのように見分けたらいいのでしょうか。 上記例文は全て分かりやすいのですが、例えばI hugged and kissed my dad at every opportunity－nothing could have felt more natural.のようにどちらが正しいのか分かりにくい場合〔ここでは推量・可能性だと思いますが〕の上手な見分け方はありますか？

よくある問題なのですが、よくわかりません。 This is the first time that I have seen him laugh. この場合、 the first time that I saw him laugh では何故だめなのでしょうか。 thatは関係副詞だと思います。
