最初のパラグラフについてのみです。文学的英語は不得意ですが技術論文的に読むとちょっと他の方と解釈が異なっておりますので、以下ご参考まで掲載します。 ＞what discomfits the contemporary reader even more is the total lack of understanding on the part of the nineteenth-century travel quoted by Andree regarding the aesthetic qualityand significance of African masks. こちらが訳の案です。 「現代人が読んで困惑することは、アフリカのマスクの持つ美的性質や重要性についてのアンドリューの引用には（引用した文献には）、１９世紀の旅行について全く理解していない部分があることだ。」 おそらくマスクに美的理解を示すような時間的余裕がなく、旅行の困難さや文化交流の厳しさがあり、そういう背景を理解していない、といったことではないかと思います。

2番 whichの修飾先がアプローチである。というご指摘が大変参考になりました。 修飾先を「主題」にしていたので and～の文意があやふやで、誤魔化してしまっていました。

１。さらに現代人が読むと困惑を覚えることは、19世紀に書かれたアンドリー(？)による旅行記の大部分が、アフリカのマスクの持つ美的性質や重要性について全くもって無理解であるという事である。 　ここではアンドレーが「引用している」と訳した方が原意に近いと思います。というのはアンドレーは、１９世紀の旅行記を「引用している」だけで現在の人かもわからないからです。 ２。これらの作品は、問題となる対象にヨーロッパとは全く異なり、簡略化や形式化の手法でしばしば達成される表現力を持つ、独自の見方を体現していると見られた、 　とも。 ３。尊敬されていた名人がおり、その名人は、その人物の手によるものだとわかる作品を作り上げ、弟子達に継承される技法や形式を持ち合わせていたということは、土地の作品は、各人が勝手決ままに作っていたのだという思い込みを壊し始めた。 ４。しかし、徹底したケーススタディや比較研究が明らかにしたように、仮面の形態は、数多くある仮面以外の芸術作品と同じように、伝統と創造とがが弁証法的に、お互いを刺激し合う点に特徴があるのだ。 　いいと思います。
