英語 話法の問題について
Mary said to me, "Will he come to the party?" を書き直して、 Mary asked me if he would come to the party. となるのですが、wouldに書き直してしまうと 「彼がパーティーに来たかどうか」という 日本語に変わってしまうように思うのですが、 なぜwouldになるのか教えてください

Mary said to me, "Will he come to the party?"を直接話法と言いますが 言った内容をセリフのように表現する方法です。 "Will he come to the party?"この内容は、言った時そのままということになります。 一方、Mary asked me if he would come to the party.は間接話法で if以下を前半の過去形に合わせて時制を合わせる必要があります。 この場合は、後半も過去にしなければなりません。 ここでは、未来を表すwillを過去形のwouldに変える必要があります。 wouldは意味的にはないに等しいですが、過去の時点で未来を表すので 訳は、「彼がパーティに来たかどうか」ではなく「彼がパーティに来るかどうか」になります。 もし、「メアリーは彼がパーティーに来たかどうか尋ねた」だと Mary asked me if he came to the party.（間接話法） ↓ Mary said to me, “dose he come to the party”（直接話法） という風になります。 直接話法は、日本語でも、よく過去の誰かのセリフをもの真似して言ったりする人が いますよね？ そんな感じと思ったら良いと思います。

would を「過去の時点での未来」と考えます。日本語は英語のように、明確な話法のルールがありません。日本語の欠陥とも言える部分です。「彼が来るつもりなのか尋ねた」となります。 「来たかどうか」なら She asked if he came to the party.とします。

英語には時制の一致というのがあります。 Mary said to me, "I am happy." ＝ Mary told me that she was happy. am というのは発言内容自体、現在形なわけですが、 said という時点と同じであり、間接話法では was となります。 will は未来形と言われますが、その過去形は would です。 時制を過去 - 現在 - 未来 という３本立てで考えると、 なぜ未来に過去形があるのか、ということになります。 will は助動詞にすぎず、現在形です。 will によって、今から先（将来）に向かう、ということを表します。 今回の場合、直接話法では will でも、間接話法としては said という過去の時点から先に向かう、ということになります。 このような、過去から先に向かっていくのが would です。 これをルールとしては will という現在形が時制の一致で過去形の would になる、 ということになるのです。 can に対して could があるように will に対して would があります。

これは英語における時制の一致という法則で、askedという過去時制に呼応して if節以下が過去形を取るというものですが、 あくまで過去の時点で『来るのかどうか』を訊ねた という事実を述べており、訳す場合でも『来たかどうか』とはしません。
