One common idea among psychlogists までが主語 「心理学者の間で一般的な一つの考え」は 普通なら is that SV. で that 節が補語になっています。 「～ということだ」と idea の説明をしています。 「～考えは、（苦しみを）理解し受け入れることができたら、 もっと効果的に苦しみに対処することができるだろう、ということだ」 この is が現在完了になったのが has been です。 he is sick に対して He has been sick since yesterday.「彼は先週からずっと病気だ」 He has been in Kyoto for five years.「彼は５年間、京都にいる、京都にきて５年になる」 一つの考えはずっと～である → ～と考えられている（考えられてきた） と訳しているのでしょう。

いつもお世話になります。 The massive recent earthquakes off Indonesia might not have killed so many if they could have been predicted. という英文がニュース英語のスクリプトにあったのですが、 『それら地震が予知されうるものであったなら、』という仮定法過去完了が、 if they could have been predicted. になるというのが理解できません。 if they had been able to predicted.とかでは駄目なのでしょうか？ よろしくご指導お願いします。

次の文章で、文の意味の切れ目とカンマが入っている所とうまくマッチしていないような気がします。 Placing opposite characters in a fairy tale makes it easier for children to understand the difference between the two, which they could not do as easily were the figures true to life, with all the complexities that characterize real people. 日本語訳は途中からですが。 （もし、その登場人物が現実に忠実で、実際の人物の特徴である様々な複雑な要因を持っていたら、これほど簡単に理解は出来ないであろう。） ifの従属節がthey couldの主節と密接になっていて、むしろwithの前にカンマがある為、with（前置詞句）がどこに属してはっきりしなくなります。実際はif節に入っているのですが。どうもカンマがあると、そこで文が一旦切れているように思ってしまいます。 そこで以下のような、４つの文にしてみました。どれがどのような理由で適切でしょうか？ 勿論、２のオリジナルが適切なのでしょうが。 1A．which they could not do as easily were the figures true to life and with all the complexities that characterize real people. *and は同じ形を並べる為、形容詞と前置詞句とは並べられない？ 1B. which they could not do as easily, were the figures true to life and with all the complexities that characterize real people. *wereの前にはカンマが必要でないか？ 2. which they could not do as easily were the figures true to life, with all the complexities that characterize real people. ＊カンマは形容詞と前置詞句を同等に並べのに使う？ 3. which they could not do as easily were the figures true to life with all the complexities that characterize real people. ＊be動詞の補語となる形容詞と、修飾語をカンマやandなしに並べられるか？ 却って疑問を複雑にしたかもしれませんが、上記のような文章でのカンマの使い方、andの使い方をどなたかお教え下さい。

Placing opposite characters in fairy tale makes it easier for children to understand the difference between the two, which they could not do as easily were the figures true to life, with all the complexities that characterize real people. 上記の文の、which they could not doの箇所ですが、 which=the difference they=children do=understand だと判断したのですが、正しいでしょうか? また、with all the complexitiesの箇所ですが、 ジーニアスの辞書によると、 「with all the・・・」で「・・・があるので」という理由を表すとのことが書いてあるので、そのような解釈が十分可能だとは思うのですが、 私は辞書を読む前に「with all the・・・」をwere the figures true to life（人物像が現実に忠実であれば）の補足説明として、「人物像が現実に忠実、すなわち実在の人物を特徴付ける複雑さを持っているのであれば」と訳したのですが、 それだと、訳はいいとして、allがついている理由が分からなくなりました。 正しい解釈を教えてください。

中学の問題なのですが。 人々は米をつくることができました。の英訳を「People could do to grow rice.」としてはダメなのでしょうか。 模範解答は「People were able to grow rice.」となっています。これはこれで正解だというのは理解できているんです。が上の自分が思いついたやつは、いいのか悪いのか、が分からないのと、ダメな場合はなぜダメなのかが知りたいのです。 お願いします。

昔は同じ町内に怖い人が何人かいて、子供が人として恥ずかしいことをすると、 いつも本気になって説教してくれたものである。そこには、子供を地域社会全体で 育てるのだという強い意識が存在していたのだと思う。そんな雰囲気のおかげで、 子供も自分は社会の一員であるという自覚をはぐくんでいくことができた。 There used to be some serious people in the same city as we lived. When children did something shameful as a peson, they used to preach the children seriously. Considering this, there must have been a strong belief that children should be brought up by everyone in the community. Thanks to the atmosphere, children were able to gradually understand that they themselves were one of the people in the society. 怖い 系が afraid と frightened しかでない残念な語彙力のため serious を使いました。 問題はないでしょうか？ 回答よろしくお願いします。
