parties は日本語で「パーティ」と言うのとは違うもののようにも思います。 後の gathering と同じで「集まり」でいいかもしれません。 gatherings occur か gathering occurs か。 as は「~として」というより, A (,) such as B で「B のような A」のパターン。

Most of them are illegal immigrants from Mexico, a fact that helps explain not only California's recent strawberry boom, but also the quiet, constant transformation of the state's rural landscape and communities. Meanwhile, the eastest-growing and most profitable part of California's farm economyーthe cultivation of high-value specialty cropsーhas also become the one most dependent on the availability of cheap labor. Nearly every fruit and vegetable found in the diet of health-conscious, often politically-aware consumers is still picked by hand: every head of lettuce, every bunch of grapes, every avocado, peach, and plum. As the demand (1) these foods has risen, (2) has the (3) of workers (4) to harvest them. Of the migrants in California today, anywhere from 30 to 60 percent, depending on the crops, are illegal immigrants. Their willingness to work long hours for low wages has enabled California to sustain its agricultural production, despite the loss since 1964 of more than nine million acres of farmland. Fruit and vegetables growers now rely on a flourishing black market in laborーand without it even more farms would disappear. Illegal immigrants, often criticized as welfare cheats, are in effect supporting the most important sector of California's economy. (1)~(4)には、number,so,for,necessary が入るようです。 文中に出てくる“it”や“one” 等が何を指しているかを分かる範囲で構いませんので指摘して頂けると助かります(例えば2つ目のかたまりの文の1文目、“ーhas also become the one”の“one”等です)。 お願いします。

On 8 March (O.S. February 23), Putilov protesters were joined in uprising by those celebrating International Woman's Day and protesting against the government's implemented food rationing. As the Russian government began rationing flour and bread, rumors of food shortages circulated and bread riots erupted across the city of Petrograd. Women, in particular, were passionate in showing their dissatisfaction with the implemented rationing system, and the female workers marched to nearby factories to recruit over 50,000 workers for strike. Both men and women flooded the streets of Petrograd with red flags and banners which read "Down with the Autocracy!" By the following day [O.S. February 24], nearly 200,000 protesters filled the streets, demanding the replacement of the Tsar with a more progressive political leader. The protesting mob called for the war to end and for the Russian monarchy to be overthrown. By 10 March [O.S. 25 February], nearly all industrial enterprises in Petrograd were shut down by the uprising.

Imbedded in the growing worldwide demand for agricultural commodities is an increasingly rigorous set of environmental and social standards. Finance institutions, commodity traders, consumer groups, environmental NGOs, and human rights organizations are pushing to raise the bar on the socio-environmental "quality" of the agricultural-commodity production chain. For example, the companies that buy most of the soy produced in the Amazon recently declared a two-year moratorium on the purchase of soy grown on recently cleared Amazon rainforest soil, responding to a Greenpeace attack on McDonald's restaurants in Europe that fatten their chickens with Amazon soy. And international climate negotiations provide another ray of hope. Last year, Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica proposed the compensation of tropical nations for their efforts to curb deforestation. Brazil advanced a similar proposal at the Nairobi round of negotiations last week. Brazil's recent success in establishing large nature reserves in the path of the expanding agricultural frontier of the Amazon demonstrates that political will can translate into the slowing of tropical forest destruction. But the demand for agricultural commodities also must come down. And there the hope is as close as our dinner tables. If Americans face the connections between diet and the planet by eating less meat -- thumbing their

This gives viewers the feeling that they are in atheater with a lot of other people. Sitcoms are popular not only in America but also in many English-speaking countries around the world.

Bean-Scattering Ceremony Originally the term setsubun referred to any of the divi-sions of the solar year, but over time it came to be associated specifically with the eve of the first day of spring. According to the old lunar calendar, the first day of spring and the new year were celebrated at about the same time. Traditional ceremonies for purification and for driving away demons were held to prepare for the new year as well as for the spring planting season. In order to drive away evil forces, people threw roasted beans at the invisible demons outside their homes and then scattered beans inside to attract good luck. This ceremony is still carried out by most families, although it is not considered as seriously as it was in the past. often one child in the family wears a devil mask, and the other children playfully throw beans at him or her as a game, not as an exorcism ceremony. 長文失礼しましたm(_ _)m
