Why is 'in' used in 'lie in your lap' instead of 'on'?
- I have a question about the use of 'in' in the phrase 'lie in your lap'.
- I'm wondering if it would not have been misunderstood if it were 'lie on your lap' instead of 'lie in your lap'.
- Shouldn't it be lying on the lap, rather than lying in the lap?

HAMLET I mean, my head upon your lap? OPHELIA Ay, my lord. HAMLET Do you think I meant country matters? が書いてある右側です。 右側は現代風の表現ですので意図が分かりやすいと思います。

これは純粋に、前置詞の意味の違いです。 たとえば、 1. He is sitting on the chair. 2. She is sitting in the chair. どちらも正しい英語です。 1の椅子は堅い木の椅子とか、折畳みのステンレスのフレームの椅子などです。 ２の椅子は、ふかふかしていて、すわるとへこむようなもの、あるいは、ひじ掛けがついた椅子、そういうイメージです。 lapにしても、頭を載せてへこむ感じがすれば、それはinでしょう。あるいはただ載せているだけと見ればonでしょう。どちらも（椅子と同じように）成立します。 あるいは、縦にひざとひざの間のくぼみに入る感じならinしかありません。 ノートパソコンを置くならonでしょう。 英和活用大辞典にはon/in sb's lap 両方可としています。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 僭越ながら失礼します。 >２の椅子は、ふかふかしていて、すわるとへこむようなもの、 というと、ソファーのような物を思い浮かべてしまいそうですが、その場合は、Sit on the sofa.のようで、She is sitting in the sofa.とは言わないようです。 ひじかけ椅子の場合等のように「（体全体を）包み込む」場合が、She is sitting in the chair.になるのだと思います。 よくよく考えてみると、幼児や赤ん坊、子猫、等、膝の面積よりも小さいものには上にのせる場合でもinが使えるのと同様に頭の面積が膝の面積よりも小さいから、膝枕もinが可能なのだと思います。
