慶大の問題です。 People differ in the color of skin, eyes, hair, in stature, bodily proportions, and in many traits.Some of us have blue eyes, some have prominent and others flat noses, some are tall and others short.We do not suppose that every person with blue eyes belongs to a different race from everybody with brown eyes. It happens, however, that blue eyes are very common in most parts of the United States but rather rare in most parts of Mexico. It is this and similar differences which make it possible to say that the inhabitants of the United States are in general racially distinct from the inhabitants of Mexico. この文章の It is this and similar differences which make it possible to say that the inhabitants of the United States are in general racially distinct from the inhabitants of Mexico. の文ですが、 this and similar differences の箇所ですが、 私はthisを代名詞と判断したのですが、 参考書には 「thisは単数形の、theseは複数形の名詞にかかるのが約束ですから、this differences とは言えませんが、ここはsimilarによって、「これと同種の〈相違〉」が追加されていますから複数形でよいのです。」 とあります。 そうなると this (differences) and similar differences という解釈をするのでしょうか。 しかし、 this similar differences であれば similar(同種の) がthisとdifferencesの間にあるから、分かるのですが、 this differences だけでは（同種の）という意味は追加されていないのではないでしょうか。

ちなみに、this (difference) は「目の色の違い」 それに加えて、similar differences「いくつかの（さまざまな）同様の違い」 （肌の色など） 「これと同種の違い」という日本語はあいまいですが、 こういう目の色の違いや、他にもいくつかの違いこそが、 アメリカ国民とメキシコ国民を区別することを可能にするのである。 this と similar は別の違いです。 この（目の色が違うという）違い および （他にも）同様の違い そういう複数の違いのことだから differences なわけです。 「この違い」という１つの違いでもないし、 「これと同様の（１つの）違い」でもないです。

this difference and similar difference(s) あまり、こういうのをまとめた、と思わなくてもいいのかもしれません。 Tokyo and Osaka prefectures こんなふうに普通に使います。 それぞれにかかるというより、 東京と大阪で２つなんだから複数。 ここも this と similar で複数 それだけのことですね。

１時間半は one hour and a half ということも多いのですが、 one and a half hours ともいいます。 one であれば単数、half も a だけど、1.5 だと複数。 これと同じで this difference and similar differences あるいは this difference and (a) similar difference なのかもしれません。 こういう、difference を後でまとめると、２つ以上分になるので (this and similar) differences となります。 共通部分をまとめる、という観点でいくと、単数でしょうが、 this and similar で２つ（以上）分という発想です。 実質、後半だけでも複数の similar differences でしょうから、 こちらの方をとって differences としていると言ってもいいのかもしれません。
