穴埋め問題の解説をお願いします
She strongly insisted that he ( ) it on his own. 1 is doing 2 will do 3 do 4 does という問題なのですが答えはどれになるのでしょうか？ また答えの理由の分かりやすいアドバイスいただけないでしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。

正解は、3 do です。 ============================================ should は、よく、「しなければいけない」、「するべきだ」と訳されますね。 must とや、have to と意味が似ていると思いませんか？ そうです。なんとなく現在の意味ですよね。でも、shall の過去形ですよね。あれ？ 「助動詞の形が過去形なのに現在のような意味を持っている」 これは、仮定法過去形を使う時の「くせ」です。 If I had wings on my back, I would fly to you. 超有名な問題ですが，こういう要求・提案・主張などを表す動詞 suggest/insist/demand/recommend の目的語としての that 節内では should 原形（イギリス英語） 原形（仮定法現在・アメリカ英語） を用います。 すなわち，ここでは 3 の原形 do が正解。 原形なのであって，時制は含まれませんので，時制の一致は関係ありません。 現在形としての does もおかしいです。 （イギリス英語の口語表現ではあり得ますが，その場合は時制の一致で did となります） これは単なる受験英語・学校文法でなく，アメリカ人に聞いても，普通に原形が出てきます。 エラそうにここで回答するのであれば， これを知らないようでは，もぐりと言ってもいいくらいです。 ここでも何十回と質問されています。

insist, suggest, propose 等の動詞はthat節を取る場合に、 助動詞shouldを本来同伴していたのですが、 時代の変化に伴い、もう結構でございます、ということに相成り 今では省略されてしまうケースが殆んどです。 She strongly insisted that he (should do) it on his own. という本来の姿からshouldを取り去れば自ずと答えは出ましょうね。
