確かに紛らわしいですが、通常は次のように ";" で分けて受け止めます。文法と言うより文章論です。 They are usually friendly; but they can be cruel, just like humans. "just like humans" は "they can be cruel" と言ったからその説明のために後から継ぎ足した（継ぎ足す必要を感じた）わけで、"They are usually friendly" までですと特に "just like humans" などと付け加える必要はないわけです。

きちんとした日本語に訳そうとすると問題なのです。 英語的には チンパンジーはふだんはやさしいけど、残酷になることもある、人間のように。 確かに but 以下を表現したことにより、like humans が出てきたのですが、 but というのはふだんは friendly というのがあって、逆接の but なわけです。 だから、but と言っている以上、前の friendly もこめて、like humans ということも言えるわけです。 英語は後ろ後ろへと流れていく。 日本語の構造上、これをそのまま訳せない。 これは言語上の限界なんで仕方がないです。

構造的にはどちらにも取れますが、内容を考えると２でしょう。 実際、人間のことを考えるとそうでしょう？

こんばんは、以下の文がどうしても訳せません。 自分で訳してみても、途中までは訳せても途中で日本語がおかしくなるのです。 １【But they only found a big hole.】 しかし、～（「彼ら」と訳すのか、「それら」と訳すのか、、）は大きい穴を見つけました。 それとも全く違う訳になるのか。。 ２【Someone called into it,"Hello? Can anyone hear me?"】 これについてはまったくわかりません。 1単語1単語しっかり訳すとやはり日本語がおかしくなります。 疑問についてですが、１の文章で、なぜonlyが使われているのでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします。

英検準一級の問題集に出てきた文章で、理解できない文法があります。 どなたか、ご教授頂けないでしょうか。 ・cockroaches can survive fifteen times the radiation that humans beings can . ゴキブリは、人間の15倍の放射能に耐える事が出来る。 (1)beings can の箇所は、倒置が起こっているのでしょうか？本当は、can beingですか？ 倒置の場合、なぜ倒置が起こるのが教えて下さい。 (2)that以下は、the radiation を修飾する文章で、解釈は以下の通りで合っていますでしょうか？ 元の文章は、 ・humans can being done the radiation.（人間は放射能に耐える事ができる） →the radiationはthatになり →done（survived）は省略 →can being は倒置が起こり、beingにsが付いた 根本的に、解釈が間違っていますか？ 間違っている場合、正しく教えて頂けないでしょうか？ どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

Humans could not have become thinkers had they not at the same time been makers. 「人間は，作る動物ではなかったら，考える動物とはなれなかっただろう．」 これは仮定法かと思いましたが，ifもなく，後半の文章の順番もおかしいと思います． Humans could not have become thinkers if they had not at the same time been makers. こうなると思います． 仮定法には，if節の順番を入れ替えることで，ifを省くことができる使い方があるのでしょうか？
