given は、下記の名詞の１「当然」「当たり前のこと」という意味だと思います。 http://eow.alc.co.jp/given/UTF-8/ たくさんの侮辱が何年もかけて交わされていた。そして関係者が皆仲直りをするには多分に大人になる必要があった、これにかかわった顔ぶれを見ると、当然のことでは無かった訳である。 両者（例えばパレスティナとイスラエル）はこれまでお互いの悪口をさんざん言って来た訳だから、そう言うことをやって来た連中が顔を揃えているのを見ると、両者の和平は、成立して当たり前、と言った簡単な物とはほど遠く、お互い大人になって歩み寄りをする必要があった、という意味ではないでしょうか。

Since the representatives of the British and French Empires did not wish to recognize its sovereignty considering it as a part of their major ally, the Russian Empire, the treaty would give a chance for some recognition in face of the Central Powers.

When the children moved to a town that was a five-hour drive away，my husband was understandably upset. We promptly set up an e-mail and chat-line service. This technology，combined with the telephone，would enable us to reach the children on a daily basis by sending frequent notes and messages，and even chatting together when we were all on-line.
