(CNNニュースより) The high-profile case -- perhaps the most closely watched of the high court's term -- is among the most important dealing with corporate vs. worker rights that the justices have ever heard, and could eventually affect nearly every private employer, large and small. "On the facts of the case," wrote Justice Antonin Scalia for the majority, the plaintiffs had to show "significant proof that Wal-Mart operated under a general policy of discrimination. That is entirely absent here." (2) Justice Antonin Scalia for the majority wrote "On the facts of the case", the plaintiffs had to show~ 「原告はthat(同格)以下のような重要な証拠を示さなければならなかった。」 http://edition.cnn.com/2011/US/06/20/scotus.wal.mart.discrimination/index.html

the most important dealing (with corporate vs. worker rights) that the justices have ever heard 短くいえば the dealing で、長くいえば the most .... worker rights の部分。 > "On the facts of the case," wrote Justice Antonin Scalia for the majority, the plaintiffs had to show "significant proof that Wal-Mart operated under a general policy of discrimination. That is entirely absent here." 私なんかは for the majority の for に初め戸惑いました。

The constitution of Country F requires that whenever the government sells a state-owned entity, it must sell that entity for the highest price it can command on the open market. The consistitution also requires that whenever the government sells a state-owned entity, it must ensure that citizens of Country F will have majority ownership of the resulting company for at least one year after the sale. The govenment will sell StateRail, a state-owned railway. The government must place significant restrictions on who can purchase State Rail to ensure that citizens of Country F will gain majority ownership. However, any such restrictions will reduce the price the government receives for StateRail.

下文中の [the result of a rare moment of weakness] これはどういうことでしょうか。 Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem relies on verifying a conjecture born in the 1950s. The argument exploits a series of mathematical techniques developed in the last decade, some of which were invented by Wiles himself. The proof is a masterpiece of modern mathematics, which leads to the inevitable conclusion that Wiles's proof of the Last Theorem is not the same as Fermat's. Fermat wrote that his proof would not fit into the margin of his copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica, and Wiles's 100 pages of dense mathematics certainly fulfils this criterion, but surely the Frenchman did not invent modular forms, the Taniyama–Shimura conjecture, Galois groups and the Kolyvagin–Flach method centuries before anyone else. If Fermat did not have Wiles's proof, then what did he have? Mathematicians are divided into two camps. The hard-headed sceptics believe that Fermat's Last Theorem was [the result of a rare moment of weakness] by the seventeenth-century genius. They claim that, although Fermat wrote "I have discovered a truly marvellous proof," he had in fact only found a flawed proof. The exact nature of this flawed proof is open to debate, but it is quite possible that it may have been along the same lines as the work of Cauchy or Lamé. Other mathematicians, the romantic optimists, believe that Fermat may have had a genuine proof. Whatever this proof might have been, ... ...

It guaranteed the basic rights of the citizen(e.g. freedom of speech, press freedom, the freedom of assembly and of religion as well as the right to strike). It guaranteed private property and insisted that the economy had to ’serve the wellbeing of the whole people and the provision of needs’. The state was to carry out public economic planning by means of legislative bodies.

In 1994, Afflerbach questioned the authenticity of the "Christmas Memorandum" in his biography of Falkenhayn; after studying the evidence that had survived in the Kriegsgeschichtliche Forschungsanstalt des Heeres (Army Military History Research Institute) files, he concluded that the memorandum had been written after the war but that it was an accurate reflection of much of Falkenhayn's thinking in 1916. Krumeich wrote that the Christmas Memorandum had been fabricated to justify a failed strategy and that attrition had been substituted for the capture of Verdun, only after the city was not taken quickly. Foley wrote that after the failure of the Ypres Offensive of 1914, Falkenhayn had returned to the pre-war strategic thinking of Moltke the Elder and Hans Delbrück on Ermattungsstrategie (attrition strategy), because the coalition fighting Germany was too powerful to be decisively defeated by military means.

Even the cable networks said they were caught off guard by the decision of Mr. Obama’s campaign to take to the air nationally nearly 10 months before the November election, instead of just focusing on local advertising in states holding contests on Feb. 5. “We’re surprised it’s been so early,” said Greg D’Alba, chief operating officer for advertising sales at CNN. “And this will probably open the door.” To that end, another CNN official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Thursday that the network had been having conversations with the Clinton campaign about the possibility of a national buy.
