Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece - by thought, choice, courage and determination. 一応訳しておきます。 良い性格というのは優れた才能よりも称賛されるものである。ある意味、才能と言うのは与えれるものである(a gift), その反面良い性格と言う物は後から与えられる物ではない。「思い」「人生の選択」「勇気」そして「決心」などの、少しずつ、少しずつの積み重ねで得られる物だからである。

No1です、訳すのを忘れていましたね。 ＞Character is much easier kept than recovered. 性格は取り戻すより、持ちつづける方がたやすい。 ですね。

直訳すると、 「性格は隠すよりも保たれるほうがもっとたやすい」 ですから、以前の回答者の回答の、 「三つ子の魂百までも」 という意訳がぴったりだと思いますが。
