needの使い方
you need a minute to rest. twitterを見てたらこの文があったんですがneedってs v o to doの形できるんですか？私はtakeかなと思ったんですが…… 後the problem is what you expect them to do. このwhat=the things thatのthe thingsはdoの後に対応しますよね？？

#1の方が出しておられる例のto break inは副詞用法の不定詞なのでneedの構文とは関係ないです。 また仮にneed O to doの構文があるとしても、それは#2の方の例のようにSVOC型の文なので、Oがto doの意味上の主語になります（人かモノかという制約ではありません）。問題の例ではminuteがrestするわけではないので、そもそもneedにこの構文があるのかという問題ではないですね。 質問者さんが想定されているtakeは、 It took an hour to finish the job.のような使い方だと思いますが、このtakeは普通、itを主語に取ります。「仕事を終えることが１時間を要した」という意味です。これはSVOCの文ではなく、itがto～を指す形式主語の文でしょう。 またHe took an hour to finish the job. のようにも言えますが、この場合もやはり「仕事を終えるために１時間使った」という副詞用法の不定詞で、takeがSVOCをとっているわけではありません。 問題の文は、「休むのに１分かかる／必要だ」という意味ではないのだから、みなさんの回答にあるように形容詞用法の不定詞「休むべきちょっとの時間＝ちょっと休む時間」です。このto restを動詞の構文とからめて考えるのは間違いです。

need ... to do の形はあります。 手持ちの辞書（「スーパー・アンカー英和辞典」）の need の項を見ると、 Today's society needs women to work. 今日の社会は女性が働くことを必要としている。 という例文が出ておりました。 で、you need a minute to rest は、「君はちょっと休む必要がある」という意味ではないかと思います。

need O to doの形はありますがその場合はOは人だけじゃありませんでした？

米国のPleasant Hill Police Departmentの防犯呼びかけのページに "Burglars only need a minute to break in" という記述があったので、 少なくとも米国では need a minute to 動詞の構文は使われていると思います。 http://www.pleasanthill.ca.gov/index.aspx?NID=448 質問者さんの 文章ではneedの目的語がminuteという名詞 "to rest"が不定詞の形容詞的用法でminuteを修飾していると思います。 the problem is ...の文章は質問者さんの思っている通りと思います。

解答ありがとうごさいます。 私が質問した文は形容詞用法だからtakeがとるsvo to doの形とは違うって事ですかo(^-^)o need o to doの形は基本ないですよね？
