too mild a word となるのは文法書にそう書いてあるから、だけでは納得いかないかも知れませんね。元をたどれば口調を整える動機です。似た例で This is too much of a coincidence. という言い方もあります。too mild a, too much of a という部分が口調が良いと感じて頂けるとよいのですが。 a too much word と言うのは口調がさほどよくありません。何故かというと too mild (too much) という部分は強調したい部分です。さりながら word (coincidence) という単語も相手によく伝わらないといけません。間に弱い a (of a) を挟んで too mild a word (too much of a coincidence) と言えばよい抑揚・リズムで両方を強く言うことが出来ます。 それがいつの間にか文法になってしまったわけです。 ただ本来文法？的には a too much word でも構わないのだ！と考えてそう書いてしまっても通じはします。とくに書いた文章なら抑揚は関係ありません。google で見ると使用頻度は 10:1 ぐらい(?)。 注：似た言い方で how painful a sight, quite a different matter, half a mile など。

ありがとうございました。 half a mile昔教科書にでも載っていたのか、この語順で覚えています。a half mile より、half a mile の方がピンときます。 google では a half mile 2,310,000 件 half a mile 3,510,000 件 でした。結構、数字が拮抗していますね・・・。 結局、自分があまり文法にこだわらない時に覚えた表現は大人になっても自然に感じるのでしょうか。 私の場合、今勉強中の教材に出てきた"too mild a word" は「どうしてこうなるんだろう」と気になって仕方ありませんでしたが、もし、同じ文中に "half a mile" と出てきても、さらっと流していたと思います。
