set off down について
he said that his one-billion people must now set off down a more sustainable path of development. という英文を見たのですが、 １０億人の人がより多くの発達の持続可能な道を... set off down というのはどう訳せばいいのでしょうか？ set off で 出発するとかの意味みたいですが、もし分かる方がいたら教えてください。 あとこの off と down は それぞれ形容詞ですか？ それとも副詞ですか？ 教えてください！

set offが「出発する」だと分かれば、後はdownだけですね。 辞書を引くと、downは前置詞として「～を通って、～に沿って」のような意味に使えることが出ていると思います。 http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=down&dtype=1&stype=1&dname=1ss “down a more sustainable path of development”で「より持続可能な開発の道を通って」のような意味になります。 品詞で言えば、offは副詞、downは前述の通り前置詞です。

set off の off は副詞で、お書きのようにset offで「出発する」という意味になり、down は前置詞で a path とつながって「道をずっと、道に沿って」くらいの感じでいいかと。walk down the street で「通りをずっと歩いていく」というのと同じですね。 「より持続可能な発展の道へと歩み出さねばならない」くらいでどうでしょう。 moreはsustainable にかかっているのであって、development にかかっているかのように訳すとまずいかと思います。
