期間の訳し方
下記の英文にぶつかって、はたと訳が止まっています。 In the 1975-1970 a period, there was an unusually sharp increase in the number of complaints about broken pipelines. 意味は「1970年から75年にかけての間、配管の破損に関するクレーム数が異常なまでに大きく増加した。」ということで問題ないと思うのですが、最初のカンマの前がどうもしっくり理解できません。 このような見慣れない書き方をされると、もしかして間違った解釈をしているのではないかと思ってしまうのです。 どなたか明解にご説明いただけませんでしょうか。

はじめまして。 イギリス人の彼に聞いて見ました。 確かに、なんで、１９７０が先じゃないの？と疑問はありますが、まあ、トータル的に、聞こえは間違っていないようですよ。書いた人が、０と９を間違えたとか・・。文法的にはよく使う形だそうです。 日本語でもありますよね、こういうの。

wickedです。 In the 1975-1980 a period, ～ が正しいとしても、文章としてはおかしい。 "a"が余計。 In the 1975-1980 period, ～ または、 During the 1975-1980 period, ～ とするべき。

普通の感覚ではそうですよね。 もちろん日本人だって日本語の文章を間違えることはよくあることで、ネイティブだからといって書き間違えがないとは言えませんね。

前後の文も出した方が、訳しやすいとおもいます。
補足
あまり多くの部分をここにUPするわけにもいかないのですが、要旨としては以下のようになります。 ・1970年にある土地が埋立地として造成された。 ・1972年から75年にかけてそこに住宅が建設された。 ・(問題の文章) ・1978年にガス工事の作業員が公害で病気になった。 ・1979年にその土地の公害調査団体が設立された。 時系列から行くと、二つ目の年号は1980年の書き間違いかとも思っています。

とある本の例文ですが、 Teachers and doctors are becoming worried about the increase in the number of girls fainting at school. 訳：「教師と医者は学校で気を失う少女の増加を心配し始めている」 とありますが、この worried ってなんでしょう？ 分詞でしょうか？うーん？ 「心配し始める」だとここは用法的に不定詞で becomeing to warry about だと思ったのですが…？気になって夜も眠れません。 超初歩的な質問でしたらすみません。
