ward →wordと思います。 （ that） my word will hurt her feelingsで 「私の言葉が彼女を傷つけるだろうということ」 will はこの場合、想像・推量を表すと考えられます。 それがoccurredとの時制の一致で過去形になったもの。 （occurredの前にneverなど、強い否定を表す語が入っていませんでしたか）

would,couldの違いによった質問は見てみたのですが、自分の聞きたいことが答えられていなかったので質問しました。 私の持つ教科書には、「手段」と「目的」をin order toもしくはso that でつなぐというものが載せられています。 そこを勉強するにあたって、 so thatで文をつなぐ場合、 例文には 手段:「change her hairstyle」 目的:「make a new start」 なら、完成文は Emi change her hairstyle so that she could make a new start. になる、とありました。 私としましては、 Emi change her hairstyle so that she would make a new start.だと思うのです。それというのも、 エミは新しいスタートを『する(would)』ために髪形を変えたのであって、新しいスタートが『できる(could)』ために髪形を変えたのとは違うのではないか、と思うのです。 他の例文では、 手段:バスケットボール部をやめる 目的:勉強時間を増やす はwould、 手段:ジャンクフードを食べるのをやめる 目的:体重を減らす もwould、 手段:ケーブルＴＶにつなぐ 目的:二ヵ国語の番組を楽しむ もwouldになっています。 他に助動詞にはmightがありますが、これば全くと言っていいほど出てきませんでした。 これはmightは「かもしれない」という意味の「may」の過去形だから、「かもしれない」に見合った意味の例文が無いから出てこない、と推量してもよいのでしょうか。

would neverについて 学校の文法解説ではwould neverは過去の拒絶とか、仮定法過去の帰結節の否定などで習うと思うのですが、最近このwould never が現在の時制として、しかもifなしや仮定法とは考えにくい文で使われているのを耳にしました。 まず仮定法で使われている例をあげると I would never resent her, whatever she did. この文は仮定法だということがわかります しかし次の二つの例文になるとどういった用法でwould never が使われているのかわかりません 一応仮定法だと想定してif節を自分でつけてみました。（自分で考えつけたした文は（）で囲んであります） I would never do that.(even if you could) I would never lie to you.(even if i needed to) 今回質問したいのは僕のこの解釈であっているかどうか それと、例文のwhatever she did はwhatever she does,またeven if you couldのcouldはcanにしたほうがよいのかどうかも教えてほしいです。個人的にはwhateverのほうは過去形で良いと思うのですが、後者はI will never do that even if you can.のほうがいいような気がします。 でもその場合will never でなくwould never を使う意味は何なのか分からなくなってしまうんですよね。。 以上二点回答よろしくお願いします

This morning my work email brought a message from a woman I haven’t seen in more than five years. We worked together (different departments, same university) in early 2011. At first I thought the email was a mistake—meant for someone else with my name—because I didn’t recognize the sender’s name. But then I remembered her. She and I had lunch or dinner together a couple of times when I lived in that city, and we talked about work stuff; both of us were from someplace else and neither had many friends there. It wasn’t what I would call a friendship. Her email says that she is coming to my current city for a particular art exhibit and that she would like to see me (maybe catch the art show together), and asked whether I would be interested in meeting when she’s here. I’m not. I remember so little about her. After all this time, do I owe her a reply? In fairness to her, I probably said something like, “If you ever come to [my city], let me know.” It would be like me to issue such an invitation never thinking she’d take me up on it. wouldにおいて、「～だろう」という推量の意味を見かけます。 推量の助動詞must ～に違いない may ～かもしれない will ～だろう(would willの控えめバージョン)という具合に。 和英辞典で調べると、推量という項目も設けてあります。しかし、英英辞典 ロングマン、オックスフォードではそのような項目が見つけられませんでした。そこで思ったのですが、この用法は一般的に有名な仮定法の用法なのでしょうか。 ロングマンでのwouldの意味 used to talking a possible situation that you imagined or want to happen 想像した、起こってほしいと望んだ可能な状況について話す時に使う 仮定法の意味で、さらに例文もほとんどifがあります。if無しもあります。 和英辞典の推量の意味での例文 This much would be sufficient.これだけあれば十分だろう これだけあれば十分だろうと想像し、その状況について話す。 推量などと言われるwouldの用法はここから来てると考えてよろしいでしょうか。ある意味、仮定法のifの省略された形。 ちなみにwillはused to say that something is trueと推量であると分かる項目があります。例 that will be Tim coming home now. ロングマン http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/would ほとんど同意を求めるだけの質問です。自分の心ではまとまっているので、あまり深く考えずに。
