old age has always been thought of as the worst age to be;but it is not necessary for the old to be unhappy. の最初のto beが何なのか分かりません。後ろにunhappyが省略されているのでしょうか。でも省略って前述のものに対してするものでしょ。 ご回答いただければ幸いです。

the worst age to be のto beはthe worst age にかかる不定詞の形容詞的用法と呼ばれるものです。「これから先に存在する」つまり「目の前にある」ということです。老年期というは自分の目の前に存在する中で最悪の時期だと常に思われている。がしかし、老人が不幸である必要はないのだ。」となります。 to不定詞というのは未来をイメージする働きを持っています。ですから意志を表す動詞などと一緒に用いられることも多いですよ。 want / hope / intend / desire / decideなど for years to come これからやってくる何年もの間→この先何年もの間 などとなります。

違いなんですか？ not to be＝～しないために ｔo be not＝？？ アルクで調べると、いちおうｔo be notがヒットしたんだけど、 You've got to be not necessarily politically correct in what you express. 表現するものが、必ずしもみんなに受け入れられるものである必要はない。 Many of the old ideals have proven themselves to be not worthy of our belief. かつての理想の多くは、今や信じるに足りないものと分かってしまった。 この後者の語順がいつ使うかわかんないです。
