Gです。 こんにちは!! 使われている使える表現と言う視点で書かせてもらいますね。 まず、どうしても「あなたはアメリカのどこから来たのですか？」と聞きたいときに、Where in the US are you from？となるでしょう。 そして、もう少し具体的聞きたいとき、つまり、アメリカのどこ?と言うフィーリングをお互いに分かりやすい、また、答えやすくて、それがどこであるのかが分かるようにするために聞くのがWhat part of the US are you from?が非常に一般的な表現です。 これを、which part of the USと言う表現に持っていくこともできます。 しかし、この方がwhat partよりこの日本語文に近いとか適切と言うことは私には感じることはできません。 What partの方が少し自然かな、と感じますが。 なぜだろうか、と考えると、違う表現でこれを文章にすると少し分かりやすくなると思います。 partの代わりにより具体的な、What state are you from?と聞くことにより、これ以上細かいもしかしたら知らない町の名前を聞いて相手にまたそれはどこ?と聞かれるのを防ぐこともできます。 もちろん、シカゴや大きな有名な都市であればいいですけどほとんどの人が知らないと思われる町に住んでいるわけですから、What town are you from？と言う言い方は、確かに学校文法では正しい表現でしょうが、使われないと言っていい表現ですね。 なんで、町の名前を知りたいんだよ、と言うことにもなりかねません。 さて、What state are you from?とWhich state are you from?の違いになりますね。 何州から?と言うのとどの州から?と言うフィーリングの違いですね。 これを県に直してみてください。 何県出身ですか?とどの県の出身ですか?とどちらが自然に聞こえますか? もちろん、何県ですね。 これが、What stateなのです。 だから、What part ofが自然に聞こえるわけです。 しかし、どっちの県からですか?と言う表現が使えないと言うことではありません。 フィーリングです。 Which partと言う言い方をすると、何か他の州と区別していると言うフィーリングが出てきてしまいますね。 何が好きですか? どっちが好きですか? の違いですね。 このご質問にはこのどっちと言うフィーリングを私には感じることができないのです。 あくまでも、どこ?なのですね。 ご質問の三つの例文に関してはもう回答が出ておりますので書かずにおきますね。 そして返事として、I'm originally from a little town called Windsor, which is about one hour south of Urbana where University of Illinois is located. But after schoooling, I moved to LA. と言う風な説明的な表現が返ってくるかもしれませんね。 LAは誰でも知っているはずだと言う理解があるわけですから、どこのあるのかは説明していないわけです。 これでいかがでしょうか? 分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。
