おはようございます。 ANASTASIAKさんの訳でも十分な気がしたのですが、 『they』は実は前の文にあったと思われる『女性』の事かな という視点で書いて見ます。 (訳) 結果として、資源が不十分になりやがて自分の家族を養えないほどになると 女性たちはしばしば最初に環境破壊に気づくことになる。 (↑) 結果として、資源が不足状態で家族を維持する事が不可能な状態になると 女性たちはしばしば環境破壊に気づく最初の人間となる。

Train conversations of this kind - and they do happen, although not of course as often as the popular myth supposes - are good example.上の文章の一文although not of course as often as the popular myth supposesの所が分からないです。解説にはalthoughの後にthey(=conversations) areの省略があると書いてありました。又比較級の場合,後ろの接続詞asの後に色々省略がありそうだなと思いました。後ろのasの文を元の完全な文に戻すとどうなりますか？ the popular myth supposes often.では無いですよね？ofthenは副詞ですから。そうすると、考えにくいですが、 the popular myth supposes (that) they are often.ですかね？ ご指導ご指摘お願いします。

英語教材の英文に Environmental groups say China is using its natural resources twice as fast as nature can replace them. (環境保護団体によれば、中国での天然資源の消費は、自然が自力で再生できる速度の倍の速さで進行しているとのことです。） という文章がありました。 as fast asで、できるだけ速く、という意味だと思うのですが、どうしてこういう意味になるのかわからないのです。 文法構造、熟語の意味にのっとって説明してください。
