並べ替え問題で It was the control of fire （and the use of clothing that allowed humans to settle ）in the cold northern areas. というぶんで （ ）のところが単語がバラバラでならべかえもんだいなのですがどうしても、 and the use of clothing allowed that humans to settle ）in the cold northern areas. ではないか、とおもえてきあｍす。 以下のことを可能にした、、だから allowed that かな、、と どうして、 答えはそうならないのでしょうか？ 宜しくお願いします。

NO2の方も書かれているように、「that」は（従位）接続詞ですから後ろに「SV～」が続くはずです。したがって、「that humans to settle in the cold northern areas（×）」が続くと考えることが誤りです。 仮に「that」を「あの～」と形容詞と捉えたとすれば「humans」が複数形ですから、「those humans」とすべきです。よってこれも誤りです。 一般に、「SVO do」「SVO to do」「SVO done」「SVO doing」の類は整序問題でよく出題されます。これは準動詞の意味上の主語が「O」であることに気づかない受験生が多いからです。 たとえば「had, stolen, my bag, I, yesterday」とあった場合に、少なからぬ受験生は （×） I had stolen my bag yesterday. としてしまいます。正解は「I had my bag stoeln yesterday.」なのですが、「I had」の後ろに「my bag stolen」を続けられない受験生が多いのです。会話でも、このような表現を使いこなせる人は一目置かれるようです。 このように【動詞】を覚えるときは「allow＝可能にする」というような日本語訳を丸暗記するだけではなく、代表的な用法も覚える必要があるのです。 私は「allow」という動詞を目にしたら、まず「allow O to do：Oがdoするのを許す、可能にする」が思い浮かびます。 たいへんなようですが、そうしなければ使える英語にはなりません。ある程度覚えれば用法パターンも無限ではありませんから、それほど苦にはならないはずです。むしろ、日本語訳を丸暗記するよりば記憶の定着率もいいのです。 ちなみに、「SVO do型」の動詞は「make, let, have,知覚動詞,(help)」のみですが、「SVO to do型」の動詞は多数あります。ざっと挙げると「force, compel, order, permit, allow, cause, enable, advise, warn, expect, want, would like, tell」などです。これだけ覚えれば充分でしょう。
