Television is a wonderful invention, bringing the whole amazing world into our living rooms. But valuable as television is, it must be used wisely. Too often, millions of young children are placed in front of television sets to be out of mother’s way. The child who watches TV for four hours daily between the ages of three and eighteen spends something like 22,000 hours in passive contemplation of the screen. The mother who thinks she is saving herself time and trouble by setting her child for hours and hours daily in front of this wonderful invention is certainly deceiving herself. ☆The time and trouble she saves now may be only a fraction of what she will lose in worries later on.

The time and trouble she saves now 今省いている時間と手間は may be only a fraction of ごくささいなものに過ぎないかもしれない what she will lose in worries later on.

回答No.1

    Fifty years ago the world population problem was hardly ever discussed. Today it has become a major issue of argument and discussion. It remains to be seen whether this attention will change things or not, whether our awareness of a serious problem leads to its solution. I suspect it may. If this should happen the power of thought and rational argument would be manifest, and there would at least be hope that the future is subject to our influence, that what we think matters. (質問)the power of thought and rational argument would be manifestの部分が分かりません。

    It may be said that the Englishman never really makes a decision. He broods; and when he has been brooding for a certain time, he suddenly realizes, not that he has decided something, but that something has been decided. How does he realize this? It is when he discovers that he has begun to take action. It may be that an event has suddenly happened which has forced him to take action immediately. In any case, once he has made the discovery, he hesitates no longer. He has been committed by the action which he has taken rapidly and instinctively. He follows it out to the end, without asking where it is going to lead him, without a plan, but without turning to the right or the left and without letting go. Later on, he finds reasons to explain his action, but it is not as the result of reasoning that he takes action at the beginning. (質問1)It may be that an event has suddenly...とありますが、具体的にどんなeventだと思われますか。 (質問2)he finds reasons to explain his actionとはどういうことでしょうか?(文字通りには訳せます) (質問3)最終文のit is not as the result of reasoning that he takes action...は問題集によると強調構文だとのことですが、これを生徒にやらせたところ、(1)it=that以下、(2)that以下はreasonの目的語、(3)強調構文といろいろに別れ、説明に困りました。皆さんならどのように納得のいく説明をされるでしょうか? (質問4)reasoningとは何ですか?(単語の意味は分かります)これは最初の文のmakes a decisionと関係があるのでしょうか? (質問5)he takes action at the beginning(最初に行動に移る)何のことかよく分かりません。

    以下の英文の和訳をお願いします。 Displacement is one means by which the dream does this. In the first place, it is the effect of feeling which is displaced, so that what appears to be most important and full of emotion in the dream may be really of least significance, whereas an apparently trifling matter may be pregnant with meaning. The emphasis of the dream is thus displaced and so eludes the censor.

    下部のExcept when~~~ からの一文がどう訳してよいか分からないので、そちっらだけでもよろしかったらお願いします。 The freezing point of normal human plasma averages -0.54℃,which corresponds to an osmolal concentration in plasma of 290 mOsm/l. This is equivalent to an osmotic pressure against pure water of 7.3 atm. The osmolality might be expected to be higher than this, because the sum of all the cation and anion equivalents in plasma is over 300.It is not this high because plasma is not an ideal solution and ionic interactions reduce the number of particles free to exert an osmotic effect. Except when there has been insufficient time after a sudden change in composition for equilibrium to occur, all fluid compartments of the body are in (or nearly in) osmotic equilibrium. The term tonicity is used to describe the osmolality of a solution relative to plasma.

    Here we examine the relationship between the sun and climate by measuring the carbon-14 content in tree-rings with annual time resolution. The GCR flux and hence the activity level of the sun can be monitored by carbon-14. Our particular focus is around the period of the Maunder Minimum and the early Medieval Maximum Period (EMMP) in the 9–10th century. Sunspot numbers and the activity levels of the sun gradually change in time with quasi-cycles of about 11 years (Schwabe cycle).The polarity of the solar intrinsic magnetic field, which is more or less a simple dipole at every activity minima, reverses at every activity maximum. It changes the track of protons, the positively charged main constituent of GCRs, due to the spirally expanding interplanetary magnetic field formed by solar wind (Kota and Jokipii, 1983) and hence changes the attenuation level of GCRs in the heliosphere. Bulk of the GCRs comes from the polar region of the heliosphere when the polarity of the sun is positive, while GCRs come from the horizontal direction when negative.The attenuation of GCRs in the heliosphere is, therefore, more sensitive when the polarity is negative to the intensity of solar magnetic field and the tilt angle of the current sheets which expand horizontal direction. Thus the variation of the GCR flux on the earth has a “22-year” cyclic component, and will be transferred to the variations in carbon-14.

    The image of personal air transportation is one of irresistible simplicity. Step into your garage, climb into your vehicle, and in moments you can be zipping through the skies on a journey free of potholes, toll booths, traffic jams, and stoplights. Every journey could be by the most direct route possible, literally “as the crow flies.” Remote areas without roads―or with roads too steep, rough, or winding for ordinary cars―would be as accessible as the heart of downtown. This image has been part of popular culture virtually since the invention of flight in the early twentieth century. Flying cars―actually, coupes with detachable wings and tails that turned them into airplanes-enjoyed limited popularity and extensive press coverage in the United States between 1945 and 1960. Designers are currently pursuing a half-dozen major flying car projects, of which Paul Moller’s M400 Skycar (computer-controlled and capable of vertical takeoffs) is the best known. The technology of flying cars has changed, but the dream underlying them has not. transportation=means of transport irresistible simplicity 魅力的で抵抗できないぐらい単純明快 in moments=immediately be zipping through the skies on a journey 大空へヒューっと飛び出す the most direct route possible 可能な限りの最短ルート “as the crow flies” 一直線に coupes クーペ型自動車 M400 Skycar 開発中の空飛ぶ車の呼称 ご協力お願いします^^;

    以下はある映画の結末についてのネイティヴ?のコメントですが、私の英語力では把握しきれません。分かりやすく訳していただけませんでしょうか。 When Amy dives in to rescue Dan, her real world experience gets mixed up with her memories and phobias about the past, where her Dad drowned and she was unable to pull him out of the water. We see her struggle with Dan, but they are appearing to sink lower and lower into the sea. Amy refuses to let Dan go as she let her father go, so she simply doesn't give up. It's all tied into her deep trauma. She drowns with Dan. Then we see the sailor circling the boat, the baby crying, and no one else in sight. All the adults have died. Then finally, the movie cuts to Amy, who can hear her baby off in the distance. She looks down to the deck, and it is her father that is laying in his front, "rescued" finally once and for all by his daughter. "Rescued" in heaven, that is. Amy has died and wherever or whatever she now is, she's finally reunited with her father and has managed to do what she has spent her entire life wishing she could have done - she has pulled him from the sea. But sadly yes, she's dead. She didn't pull Dan out of the sea, he and she both drowned in the real world. It's supposed to be a sort of spiritual, transcendent ending like Silent Hill or Solaris. I don't know why people don't get this ending. The body is too old to be Dan, with greyish hair and the same marks on his back as Amy's father in the earlier scene where we see him drown.

    次の英文を訳してください。 All Inuit live most of their lives close to salt water or fresh water. Their land has a wild look, but grass and flowers manage to live there. In the past the Inuit lived by hunting and fishing and moved all year. The Inuit year has two main seasons:a long,cold winter and a short, cool summer. Spring and fall are too short to be noticed. In summer,there is no snow on the land,and little ice on the sea. In winter the sea freezes and becomes vast ice fields.
