The Sky is Falling
-------------- Room for growth, outside America Mr Dell says he has heard all this before, “maybe ten thousand or twenty thousand times”. Back in the 1990s, he recalls, critics claimed there were limits to the firm's direct-sales model, and suggested that Dell would never be able to make laptops or servers. “People say the sky has fallen, that it's the beginning of the end,” he says. “I don't agree. There are lots of markets with room to grow.” This week Kevin Rollins, who took over from Mr Dell as chief executive officer in 2004, said the company hopes to double or even triple its market share in Europe, which is around 13%, compared with 32% in America. Sales in the Netherlands, for example, are growing by 40% a year. ---------------- “People say the sky has fallen, that it's the beginning of the end,”の意味ですが、文字通り、終わりの始まりという意味なのでしょうか。

Andrew Jackson, deputy head of security at Novartis in Basel, Switzerland, says that industry is also being affected. On 9 February, Novartis’s offices in Barcelona were vandalized during a protest, and Jackson says that there has been an overall increase in both legal demonstrations and illegal acts. “We’ve had to increase the security of some of our facilities in Europe,” he says. Novartis says that incidents outside the United States and United Kingdom rose by nearly 50% last year to 97. There have been 15 events so far this year. Jackson believes that the protests and criminal acts are being fuelled in part by British activists travelling abroad. “There is a perception that EU law enforcement has something of a soft touch,” he says. Jackson says that he has noticed a correlation between availability of budget flights to Basel and extremist activity. “It makes for a fun weekend,” he notes wryly. But not everyone agrees that the British crackdown is behind increased activity elsewhere in Europe. Activists do occasionally go abroad to protest, says Amanda Richards, a spokesperson for SPEAK, an animal-rights group based in Northampton, UK, which has led a campaign against a primate laboratory at Oxford University (see Nature 438, 716; 2005). But she believes that the rise in Europe is due primarily to rising awareness on the continent. “It’s mainly people is the countries themselves,” she says. SPEAK has been contacted by several individuals and groups in Europe who want to organize events against animal testing, she adds. Janseen says that in the Netherlands at least, the government now appears to be taking animal-rights extremism more seriously. On 12 February, the Dutch parliament passed a motion to support the use of animal testing and condemning extremist acts. Janseen says that he hopes the motion will be followed by more rigorous law enforcement. よろしくお願いします^^;

It may be said that the Englishman never really makes a decision. He broods; and when he has been brooding for a certain time, he suddenly realizes, not that he has decided something, but that something has been decided. How does he realize this? It is when he discovers that he has begun to take action. It may be that an event has suddenly happened which has forced him to take action immediately. In any case, once he has made the discovery, he hesitates no longer. He has been committed by the action which he has taken rapidly and instinctively. He follows it out to the end, without asking where it is going to lead him, without a plan, but without turning to the right or the left and without letting go. Later on, he finds reasons to explain his action, but it is not as the result of reasoning that he takes action at the beginning. (質問1)It may be that an event has suddenly... (質問2)he finds reasons to explain his actionとはどういうことでしょうか?(文字通りには訳せます) (質問3)最終文のit is not as the result of reasoning that he takes action... (質問5)he takes action at the beginning(最初に行動に移る)何のことかよく分かりません。

He is patient, dedicated, methodical in all he does. Very excellent in his work and ways, and will gain renown in his own field of life Likes to feel he has a purpose He has strong forebodings which do not materialize. However he does seem ambitious to advance himself, to get a better life, or to become free of difficulties. He is interested in the attaining of intellectual knowledge and while he uses it to help others he is idle or impractical or unassertive in using it to help himself, and advances very little in life, He could be parasitic, wasteful or carried by others. For he doesn’t seem to get personal power or position despite his high intelligence. Ends up doing what others want him to, or else evading and shipping out. He has a sense of duty but doesn't like responsibility. A passive dreamy nature. He is a clever and spiritual man. He is sympathetic and imaginative. Kind and generous. But escapist, never satisfied with life and prefers to retreat or escape from the realities of it in one way or another. Thus he has a weak side to his character that may need strengthening if he is to make the most of his opportunities in life. He is mildly mediumistic and may be interested in psychic and occult subjects. An uncommon person, spiritually inclined, mystical and yet well accepted.

But that is for the distant future. For now, Citi’s challenge is to regain its balance. Then it will have to prove that it has become less accident-prone. The bank has been heavily involved in most of the past quarter-century’s nastiest blow-ups, from the sovereign-debt defaults of the 1980s to the dotcom bust. It was even temporarily banned from launching new takeovers in 2005, after a string of regulatory lapses. Built in a hurry by Mr Weill, the group that Mr Pandit inherited lacked a solid culture. Its risk management was not up to scratch. Its investment bank was a patchwork of acquired shops and poached teams. “It was the greatest roll-up in history, but it is yet to sing,” admits a Citi executive.

He will attract money. He has little understanding of the depth of human greed cupidity and envy, jealousy. He is weak willed where friendships or illicit unions are concerned, the combination will bring about his rune. Not everyone will understand his motives and will think he is only concerned with pleasure and falls victim to it, for he has a sense of gaiety, fun, and independence or unconventionality, but it is also circumstance, not shallowness or weakness that place her in difficult relationships. Unfortunate or foolish in human relationships or marriage. But in other area s of life successful. He can brighten up drab days and difficult surroundings and likes to add color to life, he has much energy that way, but will help others and will do them with no great fuss or bother, and won't expect praise or recognition. For this reason he has many good qualities but they tend to get taken for granted, while his minor falls from grace get noticed..

From the beginning,Jean-Paul Gaultier has enjoyed a reptation as the enfant terrible of fashion. It is a subversive and yet strangely innocent image that he has always been keen to live up to. Of all the top designers,he is the most marginal,but also the best at incarnating the aesthetics,attitudes,desires and ambiguities of a whole generation of young people,not only in France but on an international level.The high level of recognition that Gaultier has achieved in London and New York is reinforced by the success of his perfume.

By 2080, global warming could result in one-fifth of the world’s lizard species becoming extinct, a global study has found. Even under the most optimistic scenarios for curbing carbon dioxide emissions, the analysis by an international team shows that one-fifth of the globe’s lizard populations, corresponding to 6% of all lizard species, may go extinct by 2050. “We’ve committed ourselves to that,” says Barry Sinervo, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who led the study. He and his colleagues found that climate change has already driven 12% of the populations of Mexico’s colourful Sceloporus lizards extinct since 1975. If emissions continue at current levels, he predicts that by 2080, 39% of the world’s lizard populations will have vanished, corresponding to a 20% loss in species. The study is published in Science this week. It’s a stunning finding, says Raymond Huey, an evolutionary physiologist at the University of Washington, Seattle, who wasn’t part of the study team. “Lizards are animals that should be very tolerant of climate warming,” he says. よろしくお願いします^^;
