「時」の意味の接続詞まで思いついていたのならあまりくどい説明は要りませんでしたね。 この表現は私も最初理解に手間を食いましたので、一応確認ですが、'until'の意味は「継続の終点」です。 He worked hard until he got tired out. という文では、「疲れきった時点で働くのをやめた」ということが読み取れますね。 I'll wait here until you come back. では、当然あなたが来たらもう待たなくていいわけです。 It was not until it got dark that they started. になると日本語のニュアンスと英語のそれが少しずれてきます。ここは、便宜的にnotを動詞修飾と考えてみてください。つまり、 They didn't start until it got dark. とするわけです。「まだ出発しない」という状態が、暗くなるまで続き、暗くなったら終わる、すなわち出発する、という時間関係です。これを理解して初めて「暗くなってやっと出発した」と訳せるのです。 *It is not until you are familiar with 'until' that you can translate this sentence. 要求もされていない補足でしたが一応確認でした。

When he told his friends about that, ......... 最後の about thatはabout itだと思いました。「he was going to change schools」これをitに置き換えて about itとするべきではないのでしょうか？ 他のと比べてみて何が違うかわかりません。 But they didn't clean the place and went home. Masako saw it and became very sad. ここはsaw itな理由はわかります。they didn't clean the place and went homeを当てはめることができますから。同じように上の文もitだと思いました。

Whatever mistakes they have made, in their growing and learning, are best forgotten. 上の文章の that is about as much about it as they want to hear. が訳せません、 自分なりに考えた訳ですが、 「それ(that=They don't mind our telling them=彼らに対し我々が彼に言うのを嫌がること)はほぼ同程度の子どものころについての（about it）量である、 その同程度とは彼らが聞きたいと思う程度である」 となり、日本語の体をなしておりません。 文法も代名詞が何を指しているかもさっぱり分かりません、 お分かりになれば教えてください。
