beyondの使い方ですが，主に否定文・疑問文の中で使われる例のように思われます。 beyond--- の意味は，「---及ばない，しない」 否定語 not を伴い，二重否定 により，肯定の意味合いが強まっているように感じられます。 よって，「かえって---する，平気で---する」のような意味合いになるでしょうか。 「彼らは，好きな奇癖を（やめるどころか，却って，その度を）深めている。」では？
beyond ～は、～の範囲を超えたところにある、範囲の外にあるという意味ですから、not beyond ～ でその範囲の外に出ない、範囲の中にいる。よって、「彼らは周りの人たちを驚かすいつもの行動を全然やめようとしなかった」という意味になるかと思います。cultivate は「培う、養う」ですから、この場合何度も好んで繰り返すといった意味合いではないでしょうか。 http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/bin/dsearch?p=beyond&stype=0&dtype=1

高校生です。 質問はタイトルの通りです。 behindとbeyondはどちらも「後ろ側」のようなイメージがあります。 持っている辞書を引くと、behindは「～の背後に」beyondは「（ある基準）を越えて彼方に」とありますが、いまいち両者の違いが理解できません。 ちなみに今手元にある参考書に丁度、 「When I have finished writing the letter, I will take you to the lake about two miles beyond the hill.」 （この手紙を書き終えたら、あの山の2マイルほど先の湖にご案内しましょう。） という文章がありますが、ここで「behind the hill.」としたら不自然な文になってしまうのでしょうか？そうだとしたらそれはなぜですか？ （といっても、あくまで例に出しただけで、この文章に限定して解説していただきたいわけではありません。例文等出しながら教えていただけると大変嬉しいです。） また、受験生なので、英作文での使い分け等も教えていただけるとありがたいです。 よろしくお願いします。
