live off には he lives off money, he lives off a pension, live off one's parents などの用法があります。目的語を that に変えて文章を作ると that は関係代名詞ということになります。 しかし今の文章では the interest が目的語になってしまっていますから、that は接続詞と考えざるを得ないことになります。そういう場合 so that を使うことが多いわけですが、so なしでも意味は通じるとして省く人も多いのですね。

He is old enough to drive. ×He is so old that he can drive. のように、enough to 不定詞を so ～ that に書き換えられないものがあることはわかりました。 それでは、too ～ to 不定詞の文で so ～ that に書き換えれないものはあるでしょうか？ あれば教えて下さい。

下記の英文についてご教授をお願いします。 If he were his old self he would have had her head off by now, and doubtless that of some other lady who had been unfortunate enough to share his throne after her. and の前までは理解できるのですが、その後の that of some other lady がどことつながっているのか皆目見当つきません。文中に名詞がポンとおかれたような感じです。そもそも、この that が何を指しているのか、さえ。。。 英語に詳しくないため、お手数かけますが、 ご教授いただけましたら幸いです。何卒宜しくお願い致します。

以下(1)(2)の文章のthatの使い方は間違っていないと思うのですが、 (3)の文章は文法的に間違っていないでしょうか？特にthatの使い方、 (2)のthatは省略可能と思いますが。(3)のthatも省略可能でしょうか？何かしっくりこないのですが。。 (3)はthe deal to acquire a 25%がしっくりくるのですが。正しいでしょうか？ 以上ご教授頂ければ幸甚です。 (1)I like this book that makes me happy.
