set off は、下記の下のほうにある句動詞の２の定義が近いと思います。 ( tr ) to cause (a person) to act or do something, such as laugh or tell stories http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/set+off?s=t ですから、「笑ったり、話しを次から次へと続けるような連鎖反応を起こさせる」と言う意味です。場所が場所だけに「ダイナマイトのような爆薬を次々と誘発させる」というオヤジギャグ的匂いもしないでは無いですね、 西部については話すことが沢山あるので、どこから手をつけていいか分からない（ほどだ）が、１は、１００を呼ぶ（＝一つ話せば百話さなければならない事になる ＞ 一つだけ話すって訳にいかない何と言っても百続いてぞろぞろ出て来る訳なんで）。問題は何を最初に話すかだ。

下記の英文の意味を教えて下さい。 It was one thing not to know one's longitude while travelling on land; not being able to calculate longitude at sea meant that navigators were sailing without knowing how far east or west they were from land. 自分でも↓のように訳してみましたが、いまひとつわかりませんでした。 「陸地で移動する間、経度がわからないことは一つのことだ。海上で経度を計算できないということは、ナビゲーターが自分たちが陸地から東西にどれほど離れているかわからずに航海しているということを意味する」 A is one thing; B is another. 「AとBは別々のものだ」と関係あるかなと思いましたが、肝心の another がなく。。。最初のone thing もどういう意味かわからず(^-^; お手数かけますが、ご教授頂けましたら幸いです。宜しくお願い致します。
