こんにちは。私は帰国子女の男子大学生です。ご質問を上から順にお答えしていきますね。 ☆can you make your English understood? これは、言われたら通じるには通じます。ただ、正しい文法かと言われれば、違うと思われます。can you make yourself understood in English?のほうがしっくりきます。（すいません抽象的で。日本の学校英語の求めているものなどがよくわからないので、これに関しては学校の英語の先生に聞いてみるほうがいいかもしれません。） ☆at/inですが、例えば、「午前中」という言い方を日本語でもしますよね？「中」とあるように、「午前」という時間帯は大体朝６時くらいから１１時ごろまでと、数時間の幅＝広さがありますよね。時計で考えると、朝６時から針が動いて１１時で止まるとき、短針の動いた分に面積ができますよね。このように、inというのはある一定の広さや幅があるものの「中」というときに使います。なので、「in」 the morningという表現をします。 atの場合は、ある点の上にポツンと存在するイメージなので、morningのように幅＝広さがある、「ポツン」といった表現がふさわしくないものには使いません。 ☆so as not to beの質問ですが、これはそもそも、英語の正しい文法ではnot to～という「否定の不定詞」は間違いとなってるからなんです。たとえば、I came here to see him. という文章は正しいのですが、これを「彼に会わないために」と否定にするときに、I came here not to see him.とするのは本当は間違いなんです。ただ、アメリカやイギリスでは日常会話では頻繁に使われます。日本語と同じで、文法が乱れてきているんですね。 since/because ですが、おっしゃる通り口語ではbecauseをよく使います。ただ、論文や堅い古い小説などでは、むしろbecauseではなくsinceを使います。要するに、堅い文章や正式な場でのスピーチなどではsince、日常会話ではbecauseです。

ある 英作文の本に “make oneself understood in English “ は 肯定文には使用できない 肯定文で 「英語で用を足すの英訳は」 can get your messages across in English can get by in English can communicate in English となってるのです 手持ちの ウイズダム では He managed to make himself understood in German. 彼はドイツ語でなんとか意思を伝えることができた アンカーコズミックでは Can you make yourself understood in Chinese? となっていて 両方の辞書を見る限り 肯定文も否定文も使用可能だと思えるのです だとしたら この英作文の表記が間違ってるのかなと思うのですが どうなんでしょうか？

お返事有難うございますっ。 sinceに関しては他の回答者の方とは意見が分かれていますね、むしろ逆？ 日常会話ではnot toでも大丈夫そうですね、海外滞在経験は一度だけなんですが、 私も会話上ではso as not to は耳にしたことがなかったので…すっきりしました！ at inに関しては理解はできるもののしっくりこなくてもどかしい感じです。 もっと英文を多読して色んな分から納得できるよう頑張ります。 帰国子女…、うらやましいですっ。
