イディオムについて
英語のイディオムについて、参考書の和訳に疑問があり投稿しました。 He took me by the hand and dragged me upstairs. （訳）彼は私の手をつかんで2階へ引っ張って行った。 このtake - by the handで私の手をつかんで。という訳なのでしょうか。 直訳すると 『彼は私を手でつかんで・・・』と考えていますが、どちらが正しいかアドバイスをお願いします。

参考書の訳が正しいと思います。 『彼は私を手でつかんで・・・』では、「手」の持ち主が彼になり、事実が変わってきます。英文の「手」は私の手です。

「どちらが正しいか」とおっしゃるのは、「私の手をつかんで」という訳と、「私を手でつかんで」という訳のどちらが正しいのか、という意味のご質問ですか？ どちらも正しく、同じ意味だということです。 翻訳の基本は直訳ではなく、意訳です。 英語と日本語では、単語も文の構造も、全然違いますしね…。 「私を手でつかんで」という言い方は、確かに事実で正しいですが、日本語のより普通の言い回しでは「手をつかむ」と言うかと思います。 ですから解釈としては、あなたのおっしゃる「私を手でつかんで」という意味で、完全に正しいです。 ついでに言うと、「dragged」が「引っ張った」ではなく「引っ張って行った」になっています。 upstairsという副詞の影響もあって、勝手に「行った」を付加していますが、やはり日本語して自然な表現を採用したということです。 「took」は、「取った」ですが、勝手に「つかんだ」に変えていますね。 「the」は訳に載せていないし、「and」は「で」という助詞で表現していますね。 全部同じことです。

No. 1 が補足します。 似た表現で He took the dog by the collar (=首輪) and let it out. という言い方があります。これだと手と手ではないのでよりはっきりしますね。 注："phrasal verb" という関連の辞書にはこの言い回しがちゃんと出ています。

「手を取って」と訳すと良いと思います。和英辞典で「手を取る」を引くと出ていると思います。両手を取る時は hands とします。
