＃４にいただいた補足を拝見しました。 つまりは、パーティーで日本人ファンが外国人歌手と話をして、そろそろ話を切り上げようか・・という時、“Oh, no, oh, wait, may we have your autograph?”とか“Oh, no, oh, wait, would you mind giving us your autograph?”と言わずに“Oh, no, oh, wait, we want you to sign something for me!”と言ったら、外国人歌手や周囲で聴いている人は、このファンに対してどんな印象を持つか、というのがご質問なのでしょうか？ まず、"want you to sign something for me!”（ある物に署名を１つしてほしい）と言われたからには、歌手は何の書類に署名させられるんだろうと身構えると思うんです。下手するとマネージャーが血相かいて飛んできます。で、ファンはおそらくそこでサイン帳かCDカヴァーを差し出すと思うので、歌手は「ああ、autographのことね。外国人だから英語がつたないのか」と思うだけで、「want」のあたりは印象に残らないと思うのですよね。 でもたぶん質問者さんがお聞きになりたいのはそんなことではなく、「May we have your autograph?（サインをいただけませんか？）」の代わりに「We want you to give us your autograph!（サインしてほしいの！）」と言ったら、どんな印象を持つかということなのではないかと想像します。印象は（ ）内の通りです。キャピキャピしている若い追っかけなら、後者でもちっとも不自然ではありません。むしろ臨場感が出ると思います（まあ、ガードマンくらいは飛んでくるかもしれませんが）。 ただ、ご覧のように、日本語でもサインを求める時には決まり文句のように「サインをいただけませんか？」と言うのと同様、英語でもサインを求める時には決まり文句のように「May I have your autograph?」と言います。これは決まり文句ですから、たまに誰かが（want のように）違うことを言うとドキッとします。ドキッとしますが、話者が外国人なら「ああ、そういうことか」と思うわけです。 一方で注意したいのが、話者の発音や会話の大部分がネイティヴなみに自然なのに、この時だけ「want」とか「sign」と言った場合です。そういう時には聴き手も、話者にネイティヴ並みの習慣を期待しているので余計にドキッとして、下手すると「知ってて圧力かけてんのか？？」と、あらぬ疑いをかけられます（経験談）。 例えば、外国人が日本語を習う時には敬語で習います（「わたしのなまえはジョンです」）。でも慣れてくると「おれ、ジョンだから。よろしくね」なんて言えるようになります。とはいえ、相手構わずこういう表現を使っていいものではありませんよね。例えば会社の昼休みに同年代の友達を紹介されて、こんなふうに言ったら、言われたほうは「なにさま？」と思うでしょう。 このようなこともありますから、慣れないうちは「May I/Would you」を使うに越したことはないわけです。つまり、文化に馴染んでくれば、自然とどんな言葉をどんな場で使っていいかがわかってくるので、自分でわかるほど馴染んできたら使うといい、という感じです。 ただ、くだんの大卒女性は、興奮して思わず変な英語が出てしまったのでしょうね。そういう時には、言ってしまった*あと*の対応で品格が伝わるのではないでしょうか。 回答になっていなかったらごめんなさい。

こんにちは、 今回は"harry potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"[UK版]に関してです。 P.71の上から2行目の文です。 場面としては、マクゴナガル先生がハリーに、ハーマイオニーと話をする間部屋の外で待つようにいう際の言葉です。 "Very well. Kindly wait outside while I have a quick word with Miss Granger about her timetable, then we can go down to the feast together." この文の中で、"Kindly wait outside ..."の「Kindly」の意味がよくわかりません。 ただ"Wait outside ..."というのと"Kindly outside"というのではどうちがうのでしょうか？ 少し調べてみると"Please kindly"といった使い方もあるようです。 この"Kindly"の使い方、意味に関して教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

「郷に入っては郷に従え」を調べると「When in Rome, do as the Romans do.」が でてくるのですが。 TV番組の奥様は魔女で「郷に入っては郷に従え」と訳されているところが 「When in Rome, do as the Romans do.」とは何回聞いても聞こえないのです。 「イフ ユウ ケイ ビーダム ジョイダム」と聞こえるのですが、なんと言っているのか わかる方いますか？ 「郷に入っては郷に従え」は「When in Rome, do as the Romans do.」以外に言い方が あるのですか？

ご回答ありがとうございます。 私のもやもやに全て答えていただきました。 「人に物を頼む時に、want toはあまり良い言い方では無い」と聞いたのですが、実際に Native speaker はどう感じるのだろう？ が、質問の出発点でした。 やはり、机上の学問には限界があることが解りました。 ありがとうございます。
