"bring power to bear" の bear の意味がわかりません
添付ビデオクリップの 2:43-44 を聴いてください。 "...We brought carrier into the area to sort of demonstrate that we're interested and could bring power to bear." bear が聴きとりにくいのですが、どうやらそう言っているようです。これはディスカバリーチャンネルの、歴史を変えた兵器についてのビデオです。台湾方向へミサイルを撃ち込む中国への牽制のためにアメリカがニミッツ空母を送り込んだ、という話です。bear という単語は多義的な語なので、やはりここでも意味を捉えかねています。bear はどういう意味としてとらえるべきでしょうか？株式用語でよく使われる意味での名詞「弱気」と取りますか？それとも動詞の「耐える」と取りますか？それとも他の意味でしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。 http://videos.howstuffworks.com/discovery/31490-weapons-that-changed-the-world-supercarrier-video.htm

今となっては懐かしい話題ですね、当時日本→台湾→香港におりましたので、、、その緊張感(特に台湾島内での)は実感しております。 to demonstrate that we were interested and could bring power to bear. この「to bear」は「この事態を堪え忍ぶ為には米国は軍事力を持ち出すぞっ」って誇示するため,,,と聞きました。

基本の bring 「持ってくる」 take 「連れて行く 持っていく」 は、なんとかわかるのですが、 ≫A few minutes' walk brought us to the library. （数分の徒歩が我々を図書館に連れていく。→数分歩けば図書館に着く。 =If we walk in a few minutes,we reach the library. ） ≫That bus will take you to Osaka in five minutes. （あのバスに乗れば５分で大阪に着きますよ。） のような場合の使い分けがわかりません。 「バスは、自分を乗せたあと何処かへ行き最終地点が自分と同じ場所ではないから take」 で 「A few minutes' walk は、自分とぴったり同じで 出発からゴールまでを一緒するので、ゴール（ the library）から見ても A few minutes' walk が 持ってくるのは、us と考えると bring」 ? なんて 考えてみました。 なんか無理があるような・・・・ 宜しくお願いいたします。

洋書でこういった文章がありました。 To the degree that its fitness for duty is regularly undercut by the tricks of profiteer, we naturally will use it less and will be less able to cope efficiently with the decisional burdens of our day. 上手く訳せませんが、前半部分のthatより後ろは「その（簡便な意志決定の）本分に対する適応性が、暴利をむさぼる者による策略によって頻繁に弱められる」、後半は「私たちは当然それ（簡便な意志決定）を使うことが少なくなり、現代の、決定を下すことにかかる負担に、ますます上手く対処できなくなるだろう」という意味だと思います。 この文のto the degree that～って日本語ではどうなるのでしょうか？ 「～の範囲に」「～の程度に」では意味を成さないですし・・・ 「もし～とすれば」と訳せばしっくり来るように思えますが、辞書でdegreeを調べてもそういう訳は載っていません・・・ お分かりになる方、教えて下さい。よろしくお願いします。

We are committed to serving your needs. 上の二つの文でcommitted toが使われていますが、この後ろにつく形は動詞、動名詞どちらでもいいのでしょうか？ また意味に違いはでてくるのでしょうか？ 以前同じような質問をした時に「committed to do」の形はない、というような回答をして頂いた記憶があったのですが実際に上のように使われています。これらはどちらでも意味に大差はない、という解釈でいいのでしょうか？ なんとなくcommitted to doingは前置詞のtoの感覚で「～すること」へ向けて一生懸命、でcommitted to doだと不定詞のtoの感覚で「～するため」に一生懸命、というように感じますが意味は同じように思えます。。。 以前同じようなことを質問したような気もしますが正しくわかっていなかった為、もう一度同じような質問かもしれませんが宜しくお願いします。

こんにちは。 お世話になります。 英語初学者です。 英文を読んでいたら、主人公達の乗ったロケットが惑星に着陸するシーンで、 次のような描写が有りました。 ‟We are going to land on that planet,”said Nadim. ‟We will soon be there.” 上段2番目の文の willが、なぜ、be going toではなく使われているのかが分りません。 置き換えて、we are going to be there soonにすることは可能でしょうか？ どなたか、意味を教えては下さいませんでしょうか？ 宜しくお願いいたします。
