whenの意味がどうのというよりも、「temprature is raised」で受動態になっているので、「（動物が能動的に）体温を上げるとき」というあなたの訳よりも上の訳のほうが自然な感じがします。

第２文のSingind～で始まる構文が分かりません。ちなみに鳥の体温調節の話だと思います。 In winter, when temperatures sometimes drop overnight to freezing or below, birds try to trap a layer of warm air under their feathers to help maintain body temperature. Perhaps the cost is worth it to ensure that intruders don't stay around and compete with them for food the followinf day. いちおう第２文を訳してみると、「エネルギーや脂肪を燃焼するのがもっとも必要なときにだけ、鳥が寒い夜にさえずることによってエネルギーが消費され、脂肪が燃焼されるのである」という感じになったのですが・・・。just when ～はonly when～ですよね。よろしくお願いします。

人間にとってもっともすごしやすい気温は23度前後になるはずです。 人間が住んでいる地域の気温も平均すればやはりそれくらいになるのではないのでしょうか。 と、いうことは人間の体温を維持していく上でもっともエネルギーを使わずに効率よく生きていくためには、体温も23度前後にすればいいのではないかと思います。 なぜ人間は、多くのカロリーを消費しながら36度前後の体温を維持して生きているのか、納得できる答えをお持ちの方、教えてください。

次に挙げるのは睡眠はなぜ必要なのかという話題に関しての文です。睡眠はエネルギー節約のためだという説があるが、キリンは５時間も寝る。という内容に続いて But the energy savings from sleep in large animals are so small it is hard to see why they would sleep at all by this theory. という文があります。訳としては「しかし睡眠によるエネルギーの節約は大きな動物では非常に小さく、先述の理論では彼らがなぜ眠るのかを全く説明できない」で良いかと思うのですが、wouldが上手く訳出できません。 眠ろうとする、くらいでも良いのかと思うのですが、willとはどう違うか、もっといえばwillすらない場合とどう違うか、などを解説いただきたいです。またこれを説明する文法的用語があれば教えてください。
